In this paper, we are going to calculate the determinant of a certain type of square matrices, which are related to the well-known Cauchy and Toeplitz matrices. Then, we will use the results to determine the rank of special non-square matrices.

We establish Pfaffian analogues of the Cauchy--Binet formula and the Ishikawa--Wakayama minor-summation formula. Each of these Pfaffian analogues expresses a sum of products of subpfaffians of two skew-symmetric matrices in terms of a single Pfaffian. By using these Pfaffian formulas we give new transparent proofs to several identities for Schur Q23 pa-functions.

We present an identity which can be regarded as a Pfaffian-Hafnian analogue of Borchardt's identity and as a generalization of Schur's identity. We give a proof using the complex analysis.

This is a complement to my previous article "Advanced Determinant Calculus" (S\'eminaire Lotharingien Combin. 42 (1999), Article B42q, 67 pp.). In the present article, I share with the reader my experience of applying the methods described in the previous article in order to solve a particular problem from number theory (G. Almkvist, J. Petersson and the author, Experiment. Math. 12 (2003), 441-456). Moreover, I add a list of determinant evaluations which I consider as intere...

Hypergeometric numbers can be recognized as one of the most natural extensions of the classical Cauchy numbers in terms of determinants, though many kinds of generalizations of the Cauchy numbers have been considered by many authors. In addition, there are some relations between the hypergeometric Cauchy numbers and the classical Cauchy numbers. In this paper, we give the determinant expressions of hypergeometric Cauchy numbers and their generalizations, and show some interes...

The double Schur functions form a distinguished basis of the ring \Lambda(x||a) which is a multiparameter generalization of the ring of symmetric functions \Lambda(x). The canonical comultiplication on \Lambda(x) is extended to \Lambda(x||a) in a natural way so that the double power sums symmetric functions are primitive elements. We calculate the dual Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in two different ways thus providing comultiplication rules for the double Schur functions...

Since every even power of the Vandermonde determinant is a symmetric polynomial, we want to understand its decomposition in terms of the basis of Schur functions. We investigate several combinatorial properties of the coefficients in the decomposition. In particular, we give recursive formulas for the coefficient of the Schur function $s_{\m}$ in the decomposition of an even power of the Vandermonde determinant in $n + 1$ variables in terms of the coefficient of the Schur fun...

We obtain a common generalization of two types of Sylvester formulas for compound determinants and its Pfaffian analogue. As applications, we give generalizations of the Giambelli identity to skew Schur functions and the Schur identity to Schur's skew $Q$-functions.

We give a simple formula for some determinants, and an analogous formula for pfaffians, both of which are polynomial identities. The second involve some expressions that interpolate between determinants and pfaffians. We give several tableau formulas for difference operators in Types A and C, as well as other operators that appear in the "enriched", or "back-stable" Schubert polynomials. There are also tableau formulas for the enriched Schubert polynomials for vexillary and $...

The purpose of this article is threefold. First, it provides the reader with a few useful and efficient tools which should enable her/him to evaluate nontrivial determinants for the case such a determinant should appear in her/his research. Second, it lists a number of such determinants that have been already evaluated, together with explanations which tell in which contexts they have appeared. Third, it points out references where further such determinant evaluations can be ...
