In this paper we investigate the 2-Selmer rank in families of quadratic twists of elliptic curves over arbitrary number fields. We give sufficient conditions on an elliptic curve so that it has twists of arbitrary 2-Selmer rank, and we give lower bounds for the number of twists (with bounded conductor) that have a given 2-Selmer rank. As a consequence, under appropriate hypotheses we can find many twists with trivial Mordell-Weil group, and (assuming the Shafarevich-Tate conj...

Let $F$ be a number field unramified at an odd prime $p$ and $F_\infty$ be the $\mathbf{Z}_p$-cyclotomic extension of $F$. Let $A$ be an abelian variety defined over $F$ with good supersingular reduction at all primes of $F$ above $p$. B\"uy\"ukboduk and the first named author have defined modified Selmer groups associated to $A$ over $F_\infty$. Assuming that the Pontryagin dual of these Selmer groups are torsion $\mathbf{Z}_p[[\mathrm{Gal}(F_\infty/F)]]$-modules, we give an...

Let G be a finite group and V a finite-dimensional rational G-representation. We ask whether there exists a finite Galois extension L/K of number fields with Galois group G, an elliptic curve E/K, and a G-submodule of E(L) tensor Q isomorphic to V.

We study the collection of group structures that can be realized as a group of rational points on an elliptic curve over a finite field (such groups are well known to be of rank at most two). We also study various subsets of this collection which correspond to curves over prime fields or to curves with a prescribed torsion. Some of our results are rigorous and are based on recent advances in analytic number theory, some are conditional under certain widely believed conjecture...

For an elliptic curve E over a number field K, we prove that the algebraic rank of E goes up in infinitely many extensions of K obtained by adjoining a cube root of an element of K. As an example, we briefly discuss E=X_1(11) over Q, and how the result relates to Iwasawa theory.

For a given number field $K$, we show that the ranks of nonsingular elliptic curves over $K$ are uniformly finitely bounded if and only if weak Mordell-Weil property holds in all(some) ultrpowers $^*K$ of $K$. Also we introduce Nonstandard Mordell-Weil property for $^*K$ considering each Mordell-Weil group as $^*Z$-module, where $^*Z$ is an ultrapower of $Z$, and we show that Nonstandard Mordell-Weil property is equivalent to weak Mordell-Weil property in $^*K$. In Appendix, ...

Let $K$ be a field whose absolute Galois group is finitely generated. If $K$ neither finite nor of characteristic 2, then every hyperelliptic curve over $K$ with all of its Weierstrass points defined over $K$ has infinitely many $K$-points. If, in addition, $K$ is not locally finite, then every elliptic curve over $K$ with all of its 2-torsion rational has infinite rank over $K$. These and similar results are deduced from the Hales-Jewett theorem.

We study the arithmetic of abelian varieties over $K=k(t)$ where $k$ is an arbitrary field. The main result relates Mordell-Weil groups of certain Jacobians over $K$ to homomorphisms of other Jacobians over $k$. Our methods also yield completely explicit points on elliptic curves with unbounded rank over $\Fpbar(t)$ and a new construction of elliptic curves with moderately high rank over $\C(t)$.

Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of odd characteristic and $K= \mathbb{F}_q(t)$. For any integer $d\geq 2$ coprime to $q$, consider the elliptic curve $E_d$ over $K$ defined by $y^2=x(x^2+t^{2d} x-4t^{2d})$. We show that the rank of the Mordell--Weil group $E_d(K)$ is unbounded as $d$ varies. The curve $E_d$ satisfies the BSD conjecture, so that its rank equals the order of vanishing of its $L$-function at the central point. We provide an explicit expression for the $L$-f...

We study the regulator of the Mordell-Weil group of elliptic curves over number fields, functions fields of characteristic zero or function fields of characteristic $p>0$. We prove a new Northcott property for the regulator of elliptic curves of rank at least $4$ defined over a number field. In the function field case, we obtain that non-trivial families of elliptic curves with bounded regulators and bounded ranks are limited families. We conclude by asking new questions.
