We introduce here the notion of Koszul duality for monoids in the monoidal category of species with respect to the ordinary product. To each Koszul monoid we associate a class of Koszul algebras in the sense of Priddy, by taking the corresponding analytic functor. The operad $\mathscr{A}_M$ of rooted trees enriched with a monoid $M$ was introduced by the author many years ago. One special case of that is the operad of ordinary rooted trees, called in the recent literature the...

We extend the bar-cobar adjunction to operads and properads, not necessarily augmented. Due to the default of augmentation, the objects of the dual category are endowed with a curvature. We handle the lack of augmentation by extending the category of coproperads to include objects endowed with a curvature. As usual, the bar-cobar construction gives a (large) cofibrant resolution for any properad, such as the properad encoding unital and counital Frobenius algebras, a notion w...

In this article we give a conceptual definition of Manin products in any category endowed with two coherent monoidal products. This construction can be applied to associative algebras, non-symmetric operads, operads, colored operads, and properads presented by generators and relations. These two products, called black and white, are dual to each other under Koszul duality functor. We study their properties and compute several examples of black and white products for operads. ...

Koszul algebras have arisen in many contexts; algebraic geometry, combinatorics, Lie algebras, non-commutative geometry and topology. The aim of this paper and several sequel papers is to show that for any finite dimensional algebra there is always a naturally associated Koszul theory. To obtain this, the notions of Koszul algebras, linear modules and Koszul duality are extended to additive (graded) categories over a field. The main focus of this paper is to provide these gen...

This semi-expository work covers central aspects of the theory of relative tensor products as developed in Higher Algebra, as well as their application to Koszul duality for algebras in monoidal oo-categories. Part of our goal is to expand on the rather condensed account of loc. cit. Along the way, we generalize various aspects of the theory. For instance, given a monoidal oo-category Cc, an oo-category Mm which is left-tensored over Cc, and an algebra A in Cc, we construct a...

We introduce a cup-cap duality in the Koszul calculus of N-homogeneous algebras. As an application, we prove that the graded symmetry of the Koszul cap product is a consequence of the graded commutativity of the Koszul cup product. We propose a conceptual approach that may lead to a proof of the graded commutativity, based on derived categories in the framework of DG algebras and DG bimodules. Various enriched structures are developed in a weaker situation corresponding to N>...

We resolve a ten year old open question of Loday of describing Koszul operads that act on the algebra of octonions. In fact, we obtain the answer by solving a more general classification problem: we find all Koszul operads among those encoding associator dependent algebras.

The aim of this article is to give a criterion, generalizing the criterion introduced by Priddy for algebras, to verify that an operad is Koszul. We define the notion of a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt basis in the context of operads. Then we show that an operad having a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt basis is Koszul. Besides, we obtain that the Koszul dual operad has also a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt basis. We check that the classical examples of Koszul operads (commutative, associative, Lie) ...

This paper is the first of two articles which develop the notion of protoperads. In this one, we construct a new monoidal product on the category of reduced S-modules. We study the associated monoids, called protoperads, which are a generalization of operads. As operads encode algebraic operations with several inputs and one outputs, protoperads encode algebraic operations with the same number of inputs and outputs. We describe the underlying combinatorics of protoperads, and...

We give an explicit construction of the free monoid in monoidal abelian categories when the monoidal product does not necessarily preserve coproducts. We apply it to several new monoidal categories that appeared recently in the theory of Koszul duality for operads and props. This gives a conceptual explanation of the form of the free operad, free dioperad, free properad and free prop.
