For an equivariant Morse stratification which contains a unique open stratum, we introduce the notion of equivariant antiperfection, which means the difference of the equivariant Morse series and the equivariant Poincare series achieves the maximal possible value (instead of the minimal possible value 0 in the equivariantly perfect case). We also introduce a weaker condition of local equivariant antiperfection. We prove that the Morse stratification of the Yang-Mills function...

Atiyah and Bott used equivariant Morse theory applied to the Yang-Mills functional to calculate the Betti numbers of moduli spaces of vector bundles over a Riemann surface, rederiving inductive formulae obtained from an arithmetic approach which involved the Tamagawa number of SL_n. This article surveys this link between Yang-Mills theory and Tamagawa numbers, and explains how methods used over the last three decades to study the singular cohomology of moduli spaces of bundle...

Given a principal bundle on an orientable closed surface with compact connected structure group, we endow the space of based gauge equivalence classes of smooth connections relative to smooth based gauge transformations with the structure of a Fr\'echet manifold. Using Wilson loop holonomies and a certain characteristic class determined by the topology of the bundle, we then impose suitable constraints on that Fr\'echet manifold that single out the based gauge equivalence cla...

In the present paper we analyze algebraic structures arising in Yang-Mills theory. The paper should be considered as a part of a project started with a paper "On maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories" devoted to maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. In this paper we collected those of our results which are correct without assumption of supersymmetry and used them to give rigorous proofs of some results of the cited paper. We consider two different algebraic int...

We present a new construction of tubular neighborhoods in (possibly infinite dimensional) Riemannian manifolds M, which allows us to show that if G is an arbitrary group acting isometrically on M, then every G-invariant submanifold with locally trivial normal bundle has a G-invariant total tubular neighborhood. We apply this result to the Morse strata of the Yang-Mills functional over a closed surface. The resulting neighborhoods play an important role in calculations of gaug...

We study the $L^2$ gradient flow of the Yang--Mills functional on the space of connection 1-forms on a principal $G$-bundle over the sphere $S^2$ from the perspective of Morse theory. The resulting Morse homology is compared to the heat flow homology of the space $\Omega G$ of based loops in the compact Lie group $G$. An isomorphism between these two Morse homologies is obtained by coupling a perturbed version of the Yang--Mills gradient flow with the $L^2$ gradient flow of t...

In math.SG/0303255, we discussed the connected components of the space of surface group representations for any compact connected semisimple Lie group and any closed compact (orientable or nonorientable) surface. In this sequel, we generalize the results in math.SG/0303255 in two directions: we consider general compact connected Lie groups, and we consider all compact surfaces, including the ones with boundaries. We also interpret our results in terms of moduli spaces of flat...

We use Morse theory of the Yang-Mills functional to compute the Betti numbers of the moduli stack of flat U(3)-bundles over a compact nonorientable surface. Our result establishes the antiperfection conjecture of Ho-Liu, and provides evidence for the equivariant formality conjecture of the author.

In this paper we show the existence of non minimal critical points of the Yang-Mills functional over a certain family of 4-manifolds with generic SU(2)-invariant metrics using Morse and homotopy theoretic methods. These manifolds are acted on fixed point freely by the Lie group SU(2) with quotient a compact Riemann surface of even genus. We use a version of invariant Morse theory for the Yang-Mills functional used by Parker and by Rade.

Shown is a new duality for the moduli spaces of Yang-Mills connections over noncommutative vector bundles, using which one sees that total data of quantum field theory are preserved by dimension reduction.
