In this paper we propose and prove an explicit formula for computing the degree of Fano schemes of linear subspaces on general hypersurfaces. The method used here is based on the localization theorem and Bott's residue formula in equivariant intersection theory.

Ballico proved that a smooth projective variety $X$ of degree $d$ over a finite field of $q$ elements admits a smooth hyperplane section if $q\geq d(d-1)^{\dim X}$. In this paper, we refine this criterion for higher codimensional linear sections on smooth hypersurfaces and for hyperplane sections on Frobenius classical hypersurfaces. We also prove a similar result for the existence of reduced hyperplane sections on reduced hypersurfaces.

We study rational curves on general Fano hypersurfaces in projective space, mostly by degenerating the hypersurface along with its ambient projective space to reducible varieties. We prove results on existence of low-degree rational curves with balanced normal bundle, and reprove some results on irreducibility of spaces of rational curves of low degree.

We survey some results on the nonrationality and birational rigidity of certain hypersurfaces of Fano type. The focus is on hypersurfaces of Fano index one, but hypersurfaces of higher index are also discussed.

We develop a technique that allows us to prove results about subvarieties of general type hypersurfaces. As an application, we use a result of Clemens and Ran to prove that a very general hypersurface of degree (3n+1)/2 \leq d \leq 2n-3 contains lines but no other rational curves.

Complete intersections inside rational homogeneous varieties provide interesting examples of Fano manifolds. For example, if $X = \cap_{i=1}^r D_i \subset G/P$ is a general complete intersection of $r$ ample divisors such that $K_{G/P}^* \otimes \mathcal{O}_{G/P}(-\sum_i D_i)$ is ample, then $X$ is Fano. We first classify these Fano complete intersections which are locally rigid. It turns out that most of them are hyperplane sections. We then classify general hyperplane secti...

We prove an effective bound for the degree of a smooth divisor of a hypersurface of P^n, n>4 (projective space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero). Our result follows from a strong (since the degree of the divisor is not involved) generalization of the "Speciality theorem" of Gruson-Peskine, which we prove to hold for any smooth, subcanonical, codimension two, projective verieties of dimension at least three.

Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ be a smooth hypersurface. Given a sequence of integers $\vec{a} = (a_1, \ldots, a_{n-2})$ with $a_1 \leq \cdots \leq a_{n-2}$, let $F_{\vec{a}}(X)$ be the parameter space of lines $L$ on $X$ such that $N_{L/X} \cong \mathcal{O}(a_1) \oplus \cdots \oplus \mathcal{O}(a_{n-2})$. The loci $F_{\vec{a}}(X)$ form a stratification of the Fano scheme of lines on $X$. We show that for general hypersurfaces, the $F_{\vec{a}}(X)$ have the expected dimension a...

We show that general moving enough families of high enough degree hypersurfaces in a complex projective space do not have a dominant set of sections.

Let $F(x_1,...,x_n)$ be a form of degree $d\geq 2$, which produces a geometrically irreducible hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$. This paper is concerned with the number of rational points on F=0 which have height at most $B$. Whenever $n<6$, or whenever the hypersurface is not a union of lines, we obtain estimates that are essentially best possible and that are uniform in $d$ and $n$.
