We study the asymptotic behaviour of simply connected, Riemannian manifolds $X$ of strictly negative curvature admitting a non-uniform lattice $\Gamma$. If the quotient manifold $\bar X= \Gamma \backslash X$ is asymptotically $1/4$-pinched, we prove that $\Gamma$ is divergent and $U\bar X$ has finite Bowen-Margulis measure (which is then ergodic and totally conservative with respect to the geodesic flow); moreover, we show that, in this case, the volume growth of balls $B(x,R...

We show that the Teichm\"uller space of a surface without boundary and with punctures, equipped with Thurston's metric is the limit (in an appropriate sense) of Teichm\"uller spaces of surfaces with boundary, equipped with their arc metrics, when the boundary lengths tend to zero. We use this to obtain a result on the translation distances for mapping classes for their actions on Teichm\"uller spaces equipped with their arc metrics.

In this paper, we study the asymptotic geometry of Teichmuller space of Riemann surfaces and give bounds on the Weil-Petersson sectional curvature of Teichmuller space, in terms of the length of the shortest geodesic on the surface. This will also imply that the sectional curvature is not pinched from above or below by any negative constant.

We introduce a new method for estimating the growth of various quantities arising in dynamical systems. We apply our method to polygonal billiards on surfaces of constant curvature. For instance, we obtain power bounds of degree two plus epsilon in length for the number of billiard orbits between almost all pairs of points in a planar polygon.

For $\Gamma$ a Fuchsian group of finite covolume, we study the lattice point problem in conjugacy classes on the Riemann surface $\Gamma \backslash \mathbb{H}$. Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hyperbolic conjugacy class in $\Gamma$ and $\ell$ the $\mathcal{H}$-invariant closed geodesic on the surface. The main asymptotic for the counting function of the orbit $\mathcal{H} \cdot z$ inside a circle of radius $t$ centered at $z$ grows like $c_{\mathcal{H}} \cdot e^{t/2}$. This problem is...

In this paper we explore the idea that Teichm\"uller space is hyperbolic "on average." Our approach focuses on studying the geometry of geodesics which spend a definite proportion of time in some thick part of Teichm\"uller space. We consider several different measures on Teichm\"uller space and find that this behavior for geodesics is indeed typical. With respect to each of these measures, we show that the average distance between points in a ball of radius r is asymptotic t...

Unlike the case of surfaces of topologically finite type, there are several different Teichm\"uller spaces that are associated to a surface of topological infinite type. These Teichm\"uller spaces first depend (set-theoretically) on whether we work in the hyperbolic category or in the conformal category. They also depend, given the choice of a point of view (hyperbolic or conformal), on the choice of a distance function on Teichm\"uller space. Examples of distance functions t...

This short note provides an overview of some theorems and conjectures obtained by the author and his collaborators. It is an extended abstract for the Oberwolfach workshop "New Trends in Teichm\"uller Theory and Mapping Class Groups", 2 September - 8 September 2018.

Let $M$ be a hyperkahler manifold, $\Gamma$ its mapping class group, and $Teich$ the Teichmuller space of complex structures of hyperkahler type. After we glue together birationally equivalent points, we obtain the so-called birational Teichmuller space $Teich_b$. Every connected component of $Teich_b$ is identified with its period space $P$ by global Torelli theorem. The mapping class group of $M$ acts on $P$ as a finite index subgroup of the group of isometries of the integ...

Given a discrete group $\Gamma$ of isometries of a negatively curved manifold $\widetilde M$, a nontrivial conjugacy class $\mathfrak K$ in $\Gamma$ and $x_0\in\widetilde M$, we give asymptotic counting results, as $t\to +\infty$, on the number of orbit points $\gamma x_0$ at distance at most $t$ from $x_0$, when $\gamma$ is restricted to be in $\mathfrak K$, as well as related equidistribution results. These results generalise and extend work of Huber on cocompact hyperbolic...
