We first prove the existence of minimally ramified p-adic lifts of 2-dimensional mod p representations, that are odd and irreducible, of the absolute Galois group of Q,in many cases. This is predicted by Serre's conjecture that such representations arise from newforms of optimal level and weight. Using these minimal lifts, and arguments using compatible systems, we prove some cases of Serre's conjectures in low levels and weights. For instance we prove that there are no irr...

Motives and automorphic forms of arithmetic type give rise to Galois representations that occur in {\it compatible families}. These compatible families are of p-adic representations with p varying. By reducing such a family mod p one obtains compatible families of mod p representations. While the representations that occur in such a p-adic or mod p family are strongly correlated, in a sense each member of the family reveals a new face of the motive. In recent celebrated work ...

The modular representation theory of finite groups has its origins in the work of Richard Brauer. In this survey article we first discuss the work being done on some outstanding conjectures in the theory. We then describe work done in the eighties and nineties on modular representations in non-defining characteristic of finite reductive groups. In the second part of the paper we discuss some recent developments in the theory for symmetric groups and Hecke algebras, where rema...

Let $p>2$ be prime, and let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified. We give a sufficient criterion for a mod $p$ Galois representation to arise from a mod $p$ Hilbert modular form of parallel weight one, by proving a "companion forms" theorem in this case. The techniques used are a mixture of modularity lifting theorems and geometric methods. As an application, we show that Serre's conjecture for $F$ implies Artin's conjecture for totally odd two-dimensional r...

We show how our p-adic method to compute Galois representations occurring in the torsion of Jacobians of algebraic curves can be adapted to modular curves. The main ingredient is the use of "moduli-friendly" Eisenstein series introduced by Makdisi, which allow us to evaluate modular forms at p-adic of modular curves points and dispenses us of the need for equations of modular curves and for q-expansion computations. The resulting algorithm compares very favourably to the comp...

We show that the completed Hecke algebra of $p$-adic modular forms is isomorphic to the completed Hecke algebra of continuous $p$-adic automorphic forms for the units of the quaternion algebra ramified at $p$ and $\infty$. This gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Serre in a 1987 letter to Tate. The proof is geometric, and lifts a mod $p$ argument due to Serre: we evaluate modular forms by identifying a quaternionic double-coset with a fiber of the Hodge-Tate pe...

The aim of the present paper is to give evidence, largely numerical, in support of the non-commutative main conjecture of Iwasawa theory for the motive of a primitive modular form of weight k>2 over the Galois extension of Q obtained by adjoining to Q all p-power roots of unity, and all p-power roots of a fixed integer m>1. The predictions of the main conjecture are rather intricate in this case because there is more than one critical point, and also there is no canonical cho...

This article is the second article on the generalization of Kato's Euler system. The main subject of this article is to construct a family of Kato's Euler systems over the cuspidal eigencurve, which interpolate the Kato's Euler systems associated to the modular forms parametrized by the cuspidal eigencurve. We also explain how to use this family of Kato's Euler system to construct a family of distributions on $Z_p$ over the cuspidal eigencurve; this distribution gives us a tw...
