This is an expanded and updated version of a lecture series I gave at Seoul National University in September 1997. It is in some sense an update of the 1979 Griffiths and Harris paper with a similar title. I discuss: Homogeneous varieties, Topology and consequences Projective differential invariants, Varieties with degenerate Gauss images, When can a uniruled variety be smooth?, Dual varieties, Linear systems of bounded and constant rank, Secant and tangential varieties, Systems of quadrics with tangential defects, Recognizing uniruled varieties, Recognizing intersections of quadrics, Recognizing homogeneous spaces, Complete intersections. This is a preliminary version, so please send me comments, corrections and questions.

We give an elementary introduction to our papers relating the geometry of rational homogeneous varieties to representation theory. We also describe related work and recent progress.

This is a survey paper about a selection of results in complex algebraic geometry that appeared in the recent and less recent litterature, and in which rational homogeneous spaces play a prominent r{\^o}le. This selection is largely arbitrary and mainly reflects the interests of the author.

Here we investigate the birational geometry of projective varieties of arbitrary dimension having defective higher secant varieties. We apply the classical tool of tangential projections and we determine natural conditions for uniruledness, rational connectivity, and rationality.

These lectures give a short introduction to the study of curves on algebraic varieties. After an elementary proof of the dimension formula for the space of curves, we summarize the basic properties of uniruled and of rationally connected varieties. At the end, some connections with symplectic geometry are considered.

We describe the natural geometry of Hilbert schemes of curves in ${\mathbb P}^3$ and, in some cases, in ${\mathbb P}^n$ , $n\geq 4$.

The goal of these lectures is to explain speaker's results on uniqueness properties of spherical varieties. By a uniqueness property we mean the following. Consider some special class of spherical varieties. Define some combinatorial invariants for spherical varieties from this class. The problem is to determine whether this set of invariants specifies a spherical variety in this class uniquely (up to an isomorphism). We are interested in three classes: smooth affine varietie...

These notes are loosely based on an introductory course in algebraic geometry given at Rutgers University in Spring of 2024. We introduce some relatively advanced topics at the expense of the technical details.

Given an algebraic variety $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$ with stabilizer $H$, the quotient $PGL_{N+1}/H$ can be interpreted a parameter space for all $PGL_{N+1}$-translates of $X$. We define $X$ to be a $\textit{homogeneous variety}$ if $H$ acts on it transitively, and satisfies a few other properties, such as $H$ being semisimple. Some examples of homogeneous varieties are quadric hypersurfaces, rational normal curves, and Veronese and Segre embeddings. In this case, we construct n...
