In this article, we prove that any Q-Calabi-Yau 3-fold with only ordinary terminal singularities and any Q-Fano 3-fold of Fano index 1 with only terminal singularities have Q-smoothings.

We study the deformation theory of a Q-Fano 3-fold with only terminal singularities. First, we show that the Kuranishi space of a Q-Fano 3-fold is smooth. Second, we show that every Q-Fano 3-fold with only "ordinary" terminal singularities is Q-smoothable, that is, it can be deformed to a Q-Fano 3-fold with only quotient singularities. Finally, we prove Q-smoothability of a Q-Fano 3-fold assuming the existence of a Du Val anticanonical element. As an application, we get the g...

We investigate some coboundary map associated to a $3$-dimensional terminal singularity which is important in the study of deformations of singular $3$-folds. We prove that this map vanishes only for quotient singularities and a $A_{1,2}/4$-singularity, that is, a terminal singularity analytically isomorphic to a $\mathbb{Z}_4$-quotient of the singularity $ (x^2+y^2 +z^3+u^2=0)$. As an application, we prove that a $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold with terminal singularities can b...

The goal of this paper is to generalize results concerning the deformation theory of Calabi-Yau and Fano threefolds with isolated hypersurface singularites, due to the first author, Namikawa and Steenbrink. In particular, under the assumption of terminal singularities, Namikawa proved smoothability in the Fano case and also for generalized Calabi-Yau threefolds assuming that a certain topological first order condition is satisfied. In the case of dimension $3$, we extend thei...

We prove that a weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold with terminal singularities has unobstructed deformations. By using this result and computing some invariants of a terminal singularity, we provide two results on global deformation of a weak $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold. We also treat a stacky proof of the unobstructedness of deformations of a $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold.

This paper first generalises the Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov unobstructedness theorem to the case of Calabi-Yau threefolds with canonical singularities. The deformation space of such a Calabi-Yau threefold is no longer smooth, but the general principle is that the obstructions to deforming such a threefold are precisely the obstructions to deforming the singularities of the threefold. Secondly, these results are applied to smoothing singular Calabi-Yau threefolds with crepant reso...

In this article, we investigate deformations of a Calabi-Yau manifold $Z$ in a toric variety $F$, possibly not smooth. In particular, we prove that the forgetful morphism from the Hilbert functor $H^F_Z$ of infinitesimal deformations of $Z$ in $F$ to the functor of infinitesimal deformations of $Z$ is smooth. This implies the smoothness of $H^F_Z $ at the corresponding point in the Hilbert scheme. Moreover, we give some examples and include some computations on the Hodge numb...

The aim of this note is to investigate characterizations and deformations of elliptic Calabi--Yau manifolds, building on earlier works of Wilson and Oguiso. Version 2: References updated and small changes. Version 3: Smoothness conditions removed from several theorems, plus some reorganization. Version 4: Several references added.

A primitive Calabi-Yau threefold is a non-singular Calabi-Yau threefold which cannot be written as a crepant resolution of a singular fibre of a degeneration of Calabi-Yau threefolds. These should be thought as the most basic Calabi-Yau manifolds; all others should arise through degenerations of these. This paper first continues the study of smoothability of Calabi-Yau threefolds with canonical singularities begun in the author's previous paper, ``Deforming Calabi-Yau Threefo...

We study deformations of a pair of a $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold $X$ with only terminal singularities and its elephant $D \in |{-}K_X|$. We prove that, if there exists $D \in |{-}K_X|$ with only isolated singularities, the pair $(X,D)$ can be deformed to a pair of a $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-fold with only quotient singularities and a Du Val elephant. When there are only non-normal elephants, we reduce the existence problem of such a deformation to a local problem around the singu...
