Let M be a PL 2-manifold and X be a compact subpolyhedron of M and let E(X, M) denote the space of embeddings of X into M with the compact-open topology. In this paper we study an extension property of embeddings of X into M and show that the restriction map from the homeomorphism group of M to E(X, M) is a principal bundle. As an application we show that if M is a Euclidean PL 2-manifold and dim X >= 1 then the triple (E(X,M), E^LIP(X,M), E^PL(X, M)) is an (s,Sigma,sigma)-ma...

Let M be a smooth manifold and V a Euclidean space. Let Ebar(M,V) be the homotopy fiber of the map from Emb(M,V) to Imm(M,V). This paper is about the rational homology of Ebar(M,V). We study it by applying embedding calculus and orthogonal calculus to the bi-functor (M,V) |--> HQ /\Ebar(M,V)_+. Our main theorem states that if the dimension of V is more than twice the embedding dimension of M, the Taylor tower in the sense of orthogonal calculus (henceforward called ``the orth...

This paper is devoted to the classification of embeddings of higher dimensional manifolds. We study the case of embeddings $S^p\times S^q\to S^m$, which we call knotted tori. The set of knotted tori in the the space of sufficiently high dimension, namely in the metastable range $m\ge p+3q/2+2$, $p\le q$, which is a natural limit for the classical methods of embedding theory, has been explicitely described earlier. The aim of this note is to present an approach which allows fo...

Galatius, Madsen, Tillmann and Weiss have identified the homotopy type of the classifying space of the cobordism category with objects (d-1)-dimensional manifolds embedded in R^\infty. In this paper we apply the techniques of spaces of manifolds, as developed by the author and Galatius, to identify the homotopy type of the cobordism category with objects (d-1)-dimensional submanifolds of a fixed background manifold M. There is a description in terms of a space of sections o...

The purpose of this article is to investigate the relationship between suborbifolds and orbifold embeddings. In particular, we give natural definitions of the notion of suborbifold and orbifold embedding and provide many examples. Surprisingly, we show that there are (topologically embedded) smooth suborbifolds which do not arise as the image of a smooth orbifold embedding. We are also able to characterize those suborbifolds which can arise as the images of orbifold embedding...

We present a one-to-one correspondence between equivalence classes of embeddings of a manifold (into a larger manifold of the same dimension) and equivalence classes of certain distances on the manifold. This correspondence allows us to use the Abstract Boundary to describe the structure of the `edge' of our manifold without resorting to structures external to the manifold itself. This is particularly important in the study of singularities within General Relativity where sin...

Let f: P-->W be an embedding of a compact polyhedron in a closed oriented manifold W, let T be a regular neighborhood of P in W and let C:=closure(W-T) be its complement. Then W is the homotopy push-out of a diagram C<--dT-->P. This homotopy push-out square is an example of what is called a Poincare embedding. We study how to construct algebraic models, in particular in the sense of Sullivan, of that homotopy push-out from a model of the map f. When the codimension is high ...

In this paper, we extend the fundamental theorem for submanifolds to general ambient spaces by viewing it as a higher codimensional Cartan-Ambrose-Hicks theorem. The key ingredient in obtaining this is a generalization of development of curves in the positive codimensional case. One advantage of our results is that it also provide a geometric construction of the isometric immersion when the isometric immersion exists.

We show that if a non-degenerate PL map $f:N\to M$ lifts to a topological embedding in $M\times\mathbb R^k$ then it lifts to a PL embedding in there. We also show that if a stable smooth map $N^n\to M^m$, $m\ge n$, lifts to a topological embedding in $M\times\mathbb R$, then it lifts to a smooth embedding in there.

Suppose that $N_1$ and $N_2$ are closed smooth manifolds of dimension $n$ that are homeomorphic. We prove that the spaces of smooth knots $Emb(S^1, N_1)$ and $Emb(S^1, N_2)$ have the same homotopy $(2n-7)$-type. In the 4-dimensional case this means that the spaces of smooth knots in homeomorphic 4-manifolds have sets $\pi_0$ of components that are in bijection, and the corresponding path components have the same fundamental groups $\pi_1$. The result about $\pi_0$ is well-kno...
