In this paper explicit decompositions are provided of the Weyl reflections in affine Lie algebras, in terms of fundamental Weyl reflections.

With the introduction of special roots, we show the existence of some special weights with quite interesting properties for finite Lie algebras. We propose and discuss two statements which lead us to an explicit construction of these special weights and roots. It is seen that special weights provides us an alternative way of expressing the whole action of Weyl groups.

For finite Lie algebras, it is shown that characters can be defined first for Weyl orbits and then for irreducible representations. For $A_N$ Lie algebras, weight multiplicities can then be calculated by only stating that characters are equivalent to Schur functions. This also means that to calculate characters there is no need to sum over Weyl groups. The compatibility with the Weyl character formula will however be shown.

We provide the first formulae for the weights of all simple highest weight modules over Kac-Moody algebras. For generic highest weights, we present a formula for the weights of simple modules similar to the Weyl-Kac character formula. For the remaining highest weights, the formula fails in a striking way, suggesting the existence of 'multiplicity-free' Macdonald identities for affine root systems.

Even though weight multiplicity formulas, such as Kostant's formula, exist their computational use is extremely cumbersome. In fact, even in cases when the multiplicity is well understood, the number of terms considered in Kostant's formula is factorial in the rank of the Lie algebra and the value of the partition function is unknown. In this paper we address the difficult question: What are the contributing terms to the multiplicity of the zero weight in the adjoint represen...

We investigate in detail relationships between the set ${\mathfrak B}^\infty$ of all infinite ``biconvex'' sets in the positive root system $\Delta_+$ of an arbitrary untwisted affine Lie algebra ${\mathfrak g}$ and the set ${\mathcal W}^\infty$ of all infinite ``reduced word'' of the Weyl group of ${\mathfrak g}$. The study is applied to the classification of ``convex orders'' on $\Delta_+$ (cf. \cite{kI}), which are indispensable to construct ``convex bases'' of Poincar\'e-...

The set of weights of a finite-dimensional representation of a reductive Lie algebra has a natural poset structure ("weight poset"). Studying certain combinatorial problems related to antichains in weight posets, we realised that the best setting is provided by the representations associated with $\mathbb Z$-gradings of simple Lie algebras (arXiv: math.CO 1411.7683). If $\mathfrak g$ is a simple Lie algebra, then a $\mathbb Z$-grading of $\mathfrak g$ induces a $\mathbb Z$-gr...

We introduce a new generalisation of partitions, multi-grounded partitions, related to ground state paths indexed by dominant weights of Lie algebras. We use these to express characters of irreducible highest weight modules of Kac-Moody algebras of affine type as generating functions for multi-grounded partitions. This generalises the approach of our previous paper, where only irreducible highest weight modules with constant ground state paths were considered, to all ground s...

The weight systems of finite-dimensional representations of complex, simple Lie algebras exhibit patterns beyond Weyl-group symmetry. These patterns occur because weight systems can be decomposed into lattice polytopes in a natural way. Since lattice polytopes are relatively simple, this decomposition is useful, in addition to being more economical than the decomposition into single weights. An expansion of characters into polytope sums follows from the polytope decomposition...

The present paper has been motivated by an aspiration for understanding the weight system corresponding to the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_N$. The straightforward approach to computing the values of a Lie algebra weight system on a general chord diagram amounts to elaborating calculations in the noncommutative universal enveloping algebra, in spite of the fact that the result belongs to the center of the latter. The first approach is based on a suggestion due to M. Kazarian to...
