We report on the existence of discrete breathers in a one-dimensional, mass-in-mass chain with linear intersite coupling and nonlinear Hertzian local resonators, which is motivated by recent studies of the dynamics of microspheres adhered to elastic substrates. After predicting theoretically the existence of the discrete breathers in the continuum and anticontinuum limits of intersite coupling, we use numerical continuation to compute a family of breathers interpolating betwe...

We investigate the existence and stability of discrete breathers in a chain of masses connected by linear springs and subjected to vibro-impact on-site potentials. The latter are comprised of harmonic springs and rigid constraints limiting the possible motion of the masses. Local dissipation is introduced through a non-unit restitution coefficient characterizing the impacts. The system is excited by uniform time-periodic forcing. The present work is aimed to study the existen...

We prove nonexistence of breathers (spatially localized and time-periodic oscillations) for a class of Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattices representing an uncompressed chain of beads interacting via Hertz's contact forces. We then consider the setting in which an additional on-site potential is present, motivated by the Newton's cradle under the effect of gravity. Using both direct numerical computations and a simplified asymptotic model of the oscillator chain, the so-called discrete ...

We study the properties of discrete breathers, also known as intrinsic localized modes, in the one-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova lattice of oscillators subject to damping and external force. The system is studied in the whole range of values of the coupling parameter, from C=0 (uncoupled limit) up to values close to the continuum limit (forced and damped sine-Gordon model). As this parameter is varied, the existence of different bifurcations is investigated numerically. Using...

We present a study of the existence, stability and bifurcation structure of families of dark breathers in a one-dimensional uniform chain of spherical beads under static load. A defocus- ing nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) is derived for frequencies that are close to the edge of the phonon band and is used to construct targeted initial conditions for numerical computations. Salient features of the system include the existence of large amplitude solutions that bifurcate w...

We present a simple numerical method for the discrete breather construction based on the idea of the pair synchronization of the particles involved in the breather vibration. It can be used for obtaining exact breather solutions in nonlinear Hamiltonian lattices of different types. We illustrate the above method using chains of the coupled Duffng oscillators. With some additional approximation, the pair synchronization method leads to a very simple physical interpretation of ...

The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) paradox consists of the nonequipartition of energy among normal modes of a weakly anharmonic atomic chain model. In the harmonic limit each normal mode corresponds to a periodic orbit in phase space and is characterized by its wave number $q$. We continue normal modes from the harmonic limit into the FPU parameter regime and obtain persistence of these periodic orbits, termed here $q$-Breathers (QB). They are characterized by time periodicity, expon...

The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem was one of the first computational experiments. It has stirred the physics community since, and resisted a simple solution for half a century. The combination of straightforward simulations, efficient computational schemes for finding periodic orbits, and analytical estimates allows us to achieve significant progress. Recent results on $q$-breathers, which are time-periodic solutions that are localized in the space of normal modes of a lattice and...

We present analytical and numerical studies of phase-coherent dynamics of intrinsically localized excitations (breathers) in a system of two weakly coupled nonlinear oscillator chains. We show that there are two qualitatively different dynamical regimes of the coupled breathers, either immovable or slowly-moving: the periodic transverse translation (wandering) of low-amplitude breather between the chains, and the one-chain-localization of high-amplitude breather. These two mo...

We consider the two-dimensional Fermi-Pasta-Ulam lattice with hexagonal honeycomb symmetry, which is a Hamiltonian system describing the evolution of a scalar-valued quantity subject to nearest neighbour interactions. Using multiple-scale analysis we reduce the governing lattice equations to a nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation coupled to a second equation for an accompanying slow mode. Two cases in which the latter equation can be solved and so the system decoupled are con...
