The study of the $\gamma^* N\rightarrow \Delta$ reaction presents the best quantitative method to explore the deviation of hadron shapes from spherical symmetry (nonspherical amplitudes). Significant non-spherical electric (E2) and Coulomb quadrupole (C2) amplitudes have been observed with good precision as a function of $Q^2$ from photon point up to $\approx 7 ~(GeV/c)^2$. Quark model calculations for these quadrupole amplitudes are at least an order of magnitude too small a...

To determine nonspherical angular momentum amplitudes in hadrons at long ranges (low Q^2), data were taken for the p(\vec{e},e'p)\pi^0 reaction in the Delta region at Q^2=0.060 (GeV/c)^2 utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The results for the dominant transition magnetic dipole amplitude and the quadrupole to dipole ratios at W=1232 MeV are: M_{1+}^{3/2} = (40.33 +/- 0.63_{stat+syst} +/- 0.61_{model}) (10^{-3}/m_{\pi^+}),Re(E_{1+}^{3/2}/M_{1+...

We report new p$(\vec{e},e^\prime p)\pi^\circ$ measurements in the $\Delta^{+}(1232)$ resonance at the low momentum transfer region utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The mesonic cloud dynamics are predicted to be dominant and appreciably changing in this region while the momentum transfer is sufficiently low to be able to test chiral effective calculations. The results disagree with predictions of constituent quark models and are in reasona...

We report a new measurement of the exclusive electroproduction reaction gamma* p -> pi0 p to explore the evolution from soft non-perturbative physics to hard processes via the Q2 dependence of the magnetic (M1+), electric (E1+) and scalar (S1+) multipoles in the N to Delta transition. 9000 differential cross section data points cover W from threshold to 1.4 eV/c2, 4pi center-of-mass solid angle, and Q2 from 3 to 6 GeV2/c2, the highest yet achieved. It is found that the magnet...

The E2/M1 ratio (EMR) of the $\Delta$(1232) is extracted from the world data in pion photoproduction by means of an Effective Lagrangian Approach (ELA).This quantity has been derived within a crossing symmetric, gauge invariant, and chiral symmetric Lagrangian model which also contains a consistent modern treatment of the $\Delta$(1232) resonance. The \textit{bare} s-channel $\Delta$(1232) contribution is well isolated and Final State Interactions (FSI) are effectively taken ...

The \gamma* N -> \Delta(1232) transition is a window on hadron shape deformation, the applicability of perturbative QCD at moderate momentum transfers, and the influence of nonperturbative phenomena on hadronic observables. We explain that the Ash-convention magnetic transition form factor must fall faster than the neutron's magnetic form factor and nonzero values for the associated quadrupole ratios reveal the impact of quark orbital angular momentum within the nucleon and \...

Electroproduction form factors describing the $\gamma^\ast p \to \Delta^+(1232), \Delta^+(1600)$ transitions are computed using a fully-dynamical diquark-quark approximation to the Poincar\'e-covariant three-body bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory. In this approach, the $\Delta(1600)$ is an analogue of the Roper resonance in the nucleon sector, appearing as the simplest radial excitation of the $\Delta(1232)$. Precise measurements of the $\gamma^\ast p \...

We present the results on the ratios $E_{1+}^{(3/2)}/M_{1+}^{(3/2)}$ and $S_{1+}^{(3/2)}/M_{1+}^{(3/2)}$ for the $\gamma^* N \to \Delta(1232)$ transition at $Q^2\leq 4 (GeV/c)^2$ extracted from the $p(e,e'p)\pi^0$ cross section using two approaches: dispersion relations and modified version of unitary isobar model. The obtained results are in good agreement with the results of other analyses obtained using truncated multipole expansion at $Q^2=0.4,~0.525,~0.65,~0.75,~0.9,~1.1...

The electromagnetic excitation of the nucleon resonances is studied in the framework of Constituent Quark Models. Particular attention is devoted to the transition to the $\Delta$ resonance and to the issue of a possible deformation of hadronic systems, mainly in connection with the problem of the quadrupole excitation. The analysis of the emerging discrepancies between data and theoretical predictions is discussed and shown to lead to important conclusions concerning the int...

We studied the electroproduction of the Delta(1232) resonance via the reaction p(e,e'p)\pi0 at four-momentum transfers Qsq = 2.8 and 4.0 GeV^2. This is the highest Qsq for which exclusive resonance electroproduction has ever been observed. Decay angular distributions for Delta to p-pi0$ were measured over a wide range of barycentric energies covering the resonance. The $N-\Delta$ transition form factor G*_M and ratios of resonant multipoles E{1+}/M{1+} and S{1+}/M{1+} were ex...
