The strong suppression of high-$p_T$ hadrons observed in heavy ion collisions at RHIC indicates the interaction of high energy partons with a dense colored medium prior to hadronization. We review the main results from the high-$p_T$ hadron analysis at RHIC and what they tell us about the medium. We then concentrate on the new possibilities that the wider kinematic range at the LHC will offer and how they will help us to better characterize the medium produced in these collisions.

The observation of the strong suppression of high pT hadrons in heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at BNL has motivated a large experimental program using hard probes to characterize the deconfined medium created. However what can be denoted as ``leading particle physics'' accessible at RHIC presents some limitations which motivate at higher energy the study of much more penetrating objects: jets. The gain in center of mass energy expected at t...

Hard probes are a cornerstone in the ongoing program to determine the properties of hot and dense QCD matter as created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. LHC measurements have so far resulted in a wealth of high P_T data, opening new kinematic windows with high statistics. Yet on first glance, several observations are counter-intuitive and seem to contradict results from the RHIC high P_T program. This calls for a combined analysis of high P_T hadrons and reconstruct...

Since the beginning of 2010 the LHC provides p+p collisions at the highest center of mass energies to date, allowing to study high $\pT$ particle production and jet properties in a new energy regime. For a clear interpretation and the quantification of the medium influence in heavy-ion collisions on high $\pT$ observables a detailed understanding of these elementary reactions is essential. We present first results on the observation of jet-like properties with the ALICE exper...

RHIC data opens new ways of characterizing the medium created in a heavy ion collision by measuring particles with high transverse momentum. In addition to the observation of the predicted jet quenching, the new data on particle correlations indicate that a strong modification of the jet-like shapes is driven by the dynamical properties of the medium. I will review the lessons we are learning from RHIC and outline some new directions which could become of primary importance a...

The Large Hadron Collider at CERN currently provides p$+$p collisions at center of mass energies of $\sqrt{s} = 7$~TeV, which allow to study high $\pT$ particle production and jet properties in a new energy regime. For a clear interpretation and the quantification of the medium influence in heavy-ion collisions on high $\pT$ observables a detailed understanding of these elementary reactions is essential. The energy loss of high-p_T partons provides insight into the transport properties of the medium created in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Evidence for this energy loss was first experimentally established through observation of high-p_T hadron suppression at RHIC. More recently, measurements of fully reconstructed jets have been performed at the LHC. In this summary the latest experimental results from the ATLAS collaboration on jet suppression are presented. In particul...

Recent results on jet production in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC are discussed, with emphasis on inclusive jet yields and semi-inclusive hadron-triggered and vector boson-triggered recoil jet yields as well as their azimuthal angular correlations. I will also discuss the constraints that these observables impose on the opacity of the medium, the flavour dependence of energy loss, the interplay of perturbative and non perturbative effects and the change of the degr...

In nucleus-nucleus collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), one generically observes a strong medium-induced suppression of high-pT hadron production. This suppression is accounted for in models which assume a significant medium-induced radiative energy loss of high-pT parent partons produced in the collision. How can we further test the microscopic dynamics conjectured to underly this abundant high-pT phenomenon? What can we learn about the dynamics of parto...
