We report solutions for stable compound solitons in a three-dimensional quasi-phase-matched photonic crystal with the quadratic ($\chi ^{(2)}$) nonlinearity. The photonic crystal is introduced with a checkerboard structure, which can be realized by means of the available technology. The solitons are built as four-peak vortex modes of two types, rhombuses and squares (intersite- and onsite-centered self-trapped states, respectively). Their stability areas are identified in the...

We study the properties of surface solitons generated at the edge of a semi-infinite photonic lattice in nonlinear quadratic media, namely two-color surface lattice solitons. We analyze the impact of phase mismatch on existence and stability of surface modes, and find novel classes of two-color twisted surface solitons which are stable in a large domain of their existence.

We analyse nonlinear wave propagation and cascaded self-focusing due to second-harmonic generation in Fibbonacci optical superlattices and introduce a novel concept of nonlinear physics, the quasiperiodic soliton, which describes spatially localized self-trapping of a quasiperiodic wave. We point out a link between the quasiperiodic soliton and partially incoherent spatial solitary waves recently generated experimentally.

The engineering of chromatic dispersion opened new avenues of research and extended the level of control upon pattern formation in the temporal domain. In this manuscript, we propose the use of a nearly-degenerate laser cavity as a general framework allowing for the exploration of higher contributions to diffraction in the spatial domain. Our approach leverages the interplay between optical aberrations and the proximity to the self-imaging condition, which allows cancelling, ...

We demonstrate experimentally the existence of three-wave resonant interaction solitary triplets in quadratic media. Stable velocity-locked bright-dark-bright spatial solitary triplets, determined by the balance between the energy exchange rates and the velocity mismatch between the interacting waves, are excited in a KTP crystal.

The stability of two-dimensional bright vortex solitons in a media with focusing cubic and defocusing quintic nonlinearities is investigated analytically and numerically. It is proved that above some critical beam powers not only one- and two-charged but also multiple-charged stable vortex solitons do exist. A vortex soliton occurs robust with respect to symmetry-breaking modulational instability in the self-defocusing regime provided that its radial profile becomes flattened...

We present a model of soliton propagation in waveguides with quadratic nonlinearity. Criteria for solitons to exist in such waveguides are developed and two example nano-waveguide structures are simulated as proof of concept. Interactions between quadratic solitons and dispersive waves are analysed giving predictions closely matching soliton propagation simulations. The example structures are found to support five different regimes of soliton and quasi-soliton existence. Puls...

We study composite spatial optical solitons supported by two-wave mutual focusing induced by cross-phase modulation in Kerr-like nonlinear media. We find the families of both single- and two-hump solitons and discuss their properties and stability. We also reveal remarkable similarities between recently predicted holographic solitons in photorefractive media and parametric solitons in quadratic nonlinear crystals.

We study the properties of two-color nonlinear localized modes which may exist at the interfaces separating two different periodic photonic lattices in quadratic media, focussing on the impact of phase mismatch of the photonic lattices on the properties, stability, and threshold power requirements for the generation of interface localized modes. We employ both an effective discrete model and continuum model with periodic potential and find good qualitative agreement between b...

A new theoretical model is developed to characterize spatio-temporal mode-locking (ML) in quadratic nonlinear media. The model is based on the two-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with coupling to a mean term (NLSM) and constructed as an extension of the master mode-locking model. It is numerically demonstrated that there exists steady state soliton solutions of the ML-NLSM mode-locking model that are astigmatic in nature. A full stability analysis and bifurcation...
