The angular momentum of the physical electron, modelled as a Dirac fermion coupled to the electromagnetic field, is found to be hbar/2, the same as that of a bare Dirac fermion and independent of the size of the electric charge.

In this article, we provide an overview of the basic concepts of novel topological materials. This new class of materials developed by combining the Weyl/Dirac fermionic electron states and magnetism, provide a materials-science platform to test predictions of the laws of topological physics. Owing to their dissipationless transport, these materials hold high promises for technological applications in quantum computing and spintronics devices.

This dissertation reports our investigation into the existence of anyons, which interpolate between bosons and fermions, in light of the Symmetrization Postulate, which states that only the two extremes exist. The Symmetrization Postulate can be understood as asserting that there are only two consistent ways of combining the behavior of distinguishable particles to obtain the behavior of identical ones. We showed that anyonic behavior then arises because of the way in which t...

Due to its interaction with the virtual electron-positron field in vacuum, the photon exhibits a nonzero anomalous magnetic moment whenever it has a nonzero transverse momentum component to an external constant magnetic field. At low and high frequencies this anomalous magnetic moment behaves as paramagnetic, and at energies near the first threshold of pair creation it has a maximum value greater than twice the electron anomalous magnetic moment. These results might be intere...

A model-independent formulation of anyons as spinning particles is presented. The general properties of the classical theory of (2+1)-dimensional relativistic fractional spin particles and some properties of their quantum theory are investigated. The relationship between all the known approaches to anyons as spinning particles is established. Some widespread misleading notions on the general properties of (2+1)-dimensional anyons are removed.

It is substantiated that spin is a notion associated with the group of internal symmetry that is tightly connected with the geometrical structure of spacetime. The wave equation for the description of the particles with spin one half is proposed. On this ground it is shown that the spin of electron is exhibited through the quantum number and accordingly the Dirac equation describes properties of particles with the projection of spin equal plus or minus one half. On contrary, ...

A glance at recent research on magnetism turns up a curious set of articles discussing, or claiming evidence for, a state of matter called a quantum spin liquid (QSL). These articles are notable in their invocation of exotic notions of topological physics, quantum entanglement, fractional quantum numbers, anyon statistics and gauge field theories. So what is a QSL and why do we need this complicated technical vocabulary to describe it? Our aim in this article is to introduce ...

In December 1924 Wolfgang Pauli proposed the idea of an inner degree of freedom of the electron, which he insisted should be thought of as genuinely quantum mechanical in nature. Shortly thereafter Ralph Kronig and, independently, Samuel Goudsmit and George Uhlenbeck took up a less radical stance by suggesting that this degree of freedom somehow corresponded to an inner rotational motion, though it was unclear from the very beginning how literal one was actually supposed to t...

The electron magnetic moment decomposition calculated in QED is proposed to have origin in a multi-vortex internal structure of the electron. This proposition is founded on two important contributions of the present work. First, a critical review on Weyl model of electron, Einstein-Rosen bridge and Wheeler's wormholes leads to a new idea of a topological defect in cylindrical space-time geometry as a natural representation of the electron. A concrete realization of this idea ...
