Using the eigenchannel R-matrix method we calculate partial photoionization cross sections from the ground state of the helium atom for incident photon energies up to the N=9 manifold. The wide energy range covered by our calculations permits a thorough investigation of general patterns in the cross sections which were first discussed by Menzel and co-workers [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 54}, 2080 (1996)]. The existence of these patterns can easily be understood in terms of propensity ...

New approach to highly accurate calculations of the photodetachment cross-sections of the negatively charged hydrogen ions is developed. This effective, fast and numerically stable method is based on the use of the Rayleigh's formula for the spherical Bessel functions. Photodetachment cross-sections of the negatively charged hydrogen ion(s) ${}^{\infty}$H$^{-}$, ${}^{1}$H$^{-}$ (protium), ${}^{2}$H$^{-}$ (deuterium D$^{-}$) and ${}^{3}$H$^{-}$ (tritium T$^{-}$) are determined...

We present an \emph{ab-initio} approach for computing the photoionization spectrum near autoionization resonances in multi-electron systems. While traditional (Hermitian) theories typically require computing the continuum states, which are difficult to obtain with high accuracy, our non-Hermitian approach requires only discrete bound and metastable states, which are accurately computed with advanced quantum chemistry tools. We derive a simple formula for the absorption linesh...

Ionization-excitation of an atom induced by the absorption of a single photon in the presence of a neighbouring atom is studied. The latter is, first, resonantly photoexcited and, afterwards, transfers the excitation energy radiationlessly to the other atom, leading to its ionization with simultaneous excitation. The process relies on the combined effects of interatomic and intraatomic electron correlations. Under suitable conditions, it can dominate by several orders of magn...

Multiphoton ionization of helium is investigated in the superintense field regime, with particular emphasis on the role of the electron-electron interaction in the ionization and stabilization dynamics. To accomplish this, we solve ab initio the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation with the full electron-electron interaction included. By comparing the ionization yields obtained from the full calculations with corresponding results of an independent-electron model, we come to...

We investigate the total effect of correlations on photoionization of atomic shells with nonzero orbital momentum, in the nonrelativistic high energy asymptotic limit, considering the exclusive case of the dominant final state of an initial neutral atom. We find that the substantial cancellation of the dominant intra-shell carrelations, which had been reported earlier, can be understood utilizing the closure properties satisfied by the eigen functions of the nonrelativistic H...

We study theoretically the photoabsorption spectra of an attosecond XUV pulse by a laserdressed atomic system. A weak XUV excites an autoionizing state which is strongly coupled to another autoionizing state by a laser. The theory was applied to explain two recent experiments [Loh, Greene, and Leone, Chem. Phys. 350, 7 (2008); Wang, Chini, Chen, Zhang, Cheng, He, Cheng, Wu, Thumm, and Chang, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 143002 (2010)] where the absorption spectra of the XUV lights we...

A simple method of variational calculations of the electronic structure of a two-electron atom/ion, primarily near the nucleus, is proposed. The method as a whole consists of a standard solution of a generalized matrix eigenvalue equation, all matrix elements of which are reduced to a numerical calculation of one-dimensional integrals. Distinctive features of the method are: The use of the hyperspherical coordinate system. The inclusion of logarithms of the hyperspherical rad...

Hyperspherical partial wave approach has been applied here in the study of double photoionization of the helium atom for equal energy sharing geometry at 20 eV excess energy. Calculations have been done both in length and velocity gauges and are found to agree with each other, with the CCC results and with experiments and exhibit some advantages of the corresponding three particle wave function over other wave functions in use.

We investigate the dynamics of the photodissociation of the hydrohelium cation HeH$^+$ by XUV radiation with the aim to establish a detailed comparison with a recent experimental work carried out at the FLASH free electron laser using both vibrationally hot and cold ions. As shown in previous theoretical works, the comparison is hindered by the fact that the experimental ro-vibrational distribution of the ions is unknown. We determine this distribution using a dissociative ch...
