We first give a brief overview over quantum computing, quantum key distribution (QKD), a practical architecture that integrates (QKD) in current internet security architectures, and aspects of network security. We introduce the concept of quantum contracts inspired from game theory. Finally, we introduce the basic architecture of the quantum internet and present some protocols.

Quantum mechanics is the current best description of the world as we know it. Experiments have shown that quantum predictions are accurate up ten places of decimal. In quantum cryptography much work has been devoted to the study of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). The purpose of QKD is to securely distribute secret keys between the users in a network. As a result, several quantum cryptographic protocols have been implemented and tested after the advent of quantum computing. In...

One of the biggest concerns among cybersecurity professionals these days is the hype around quantum computing, its incomprehensible power, and its implications. The advancement in quantum computing has the potential to revolutionize our daily lives, but it can also completely break down the Internet as we know it. Mathematicians and physicists have developed algorithms based on quantum computing, which can change the Internet security paradigm. This article discusses quantum ...

The possibility of quantum computing has been proposed decades ago, at least as far back as the 1980s, and distributed quantum computing has been studied around two decades ago. Recent times have seen experimental successes and advances in quantum computer hardware and in quantum networking, leading towards the quantum Internet. We provide in this paper an overview of concepts and ideas in distributed quantum computing since over two decades ago as well as look at recent effo...

Quantum information, computation and communication, will have a great impact on our world. One important subfield will be quantum networking and the quantum Internet. The purpose of a quantum Internet is to enable applications that are fundamentally out of reach for the classical Internet. Quantum networks enable new capabilities to communication systems. This allows the parties to generate long distance quantum entanglement, which serves a number of tasks including the gener...

As the field of the quantum internet advances, the necessity for a comprehensive guide to navigate its complexities has become increasingly crucial. Quantum computing, a more established relative, shares foundational principles with the quantum internet; however, distinguishing between the two is essential for further development and deeper understanding. This work systematically introduces the quantum internet by addressing fundamental questions: Why is it important? What ar...

Following the emergence of quantum computing, the subsequent quantum revolution will be that of interconnecting individual quantum computers at global level. In the same way that classical computers only realised their full potential with the emergence of the internet, a fully realised quantum internet is the next stage of evolution for quantum computation. This work examines in detail how the quantum internet would evolve in practice, focusing not only on the technology itse...

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is an approach for establishing symmetrical binary keys between distant users in an information-theoretically secure way. In this paper we provide an overview of existing solutions that integrate QKD within the most popular architecture for establishing secure communications in modern IP (Internet Protocol) networks - IPsec (Internet Protocol security). The provided overview can be used to further design the integration of QKD within the IPsec a...

The use of quantum cryptography in everyday applications has gained attention in both industrial and academic fields. Due to advancements in quantum electronics, practical quantum devices are already available in the market, and ready for wider use. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) is a crucial aspect of quantum cryptography, which involves generating and distributing symmetric cryptographic keys between geographically separated users using principles of quantum physics. Many s...

The vision of a quantum internet is to fundamentally enhance Internet technology by enabling quantum communication between any two points on Earth. While the first realisations of small scale quantum networks are expected in the near future, scaling such networks presents immense challenges to physics, computer science and engineering. Here, we provide a gentle introduction to quantum networking targeted at computer scientists, and survey the state of the art. We proceed to d...

Secure communication plays a crucial role in the Internet Age. Quantum mechanics may revolutionise cryptography as we know it today. In this Review Article, we introduce the motivation and the current state of the art of research in quantum cryptography. In particular, we discuss the present security model together with its assumptions, strengths and weaknesses. After a brief introduction to recent experimental progress and challenges, we survey the latest developments in qua...
