We investigate the time-dependent variance of the fidelity with which an initial narrow wavepacket is reconstructed after its dynamics is time-reversed with a perturbed Hamiltonian. In the semiclassical regime of perturbation, we show that the variance first rises algebraically up to a critical time $t_c$, after which it decays. To leading order in the effective Planck's constant $\hbar_{\rm eff}$, this decay is given by the sum of a classical term $\simeq \exp[-2 \lambda t]$...

By considering correlations between classical orbits we derive semiclassical expressions for the decay of the quantum fidelity amplitude for classically chaotic quantum systems, as well as for its squared modulus, the fidelity or Loschmidt echo. Our semiclassical results for the fidelity amplitude agree with random matrix theory (RMT) and supersymmetry predictions in the universal Fermi golden rule regime. The calculated quantum corrections can be viewed as arising from a sta...

The Loschmidt echo (LE) (or fidelity) quantifies the sensitivity of the time evolution of a quantum system with respect to a perturbation of the Hamiltonian. In a typical chaotic system the LE has been previously argued to exhibit a long-time saturation at a value inversely proportional to the effective size of the Hilbert space of the system. However, until now no quantitative results have been known and, in particular, no explicit expression for the proportionality constant...

We study the short-time stability of quantum dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional systems with respect to small localized perturbations of the potential. To this end, we address, analytically and numerically, the decay of the Loschmidt echo (LE) during times short compared to the Ehrenfest time. We find that the LE is generally a non-monotonous function of time and exhibits strongly pronounced minima and maxima at the instants of time when the corresponding classical particle tr...

If a magnetic polarization excess is locally injected in a crystal of interacting spins, this "excitation" would spread as consequence of spin-spin interactions. Such an apparently irreversible process is known as spin diffusion and it can lead the system back to "equilibrium". Even so, a unitary quantum dynamics would ensure a precise memory of the non-equilibrium initial condition. Then, if at certain time, say $t/2$, an experimental protocol reverses the many-body dynamics...

The decay of the overlap between a wave packet evolved with a Hamiltonian H and the same state evolved with H}+$\Sigma $ serves as a measure of the decoherence time $\tau_{\phi}$. Recent experimental and analytical evidence on classically chaotic systems suggest that, under certain conditions, $\tau_{\phi}$ depends on H but not on $\Sigma $. By solving numerically a Hamiltonian model we find evidence of that property provided that the system shows a Wigner-Dyson spectrum (whi...

Fidelity serves as a benchmark for the relieability in quantum information processes, and has recently atracted much interest as a measure of the susceptibility of dynamics to perturbations. A rich variety of regimes for fidelity decay have emerged. The purpose of the present review is to describe these regimes, to give the theory that supports them, and to show some important applications and experiments. While we mention several approaches we use time correlation functions ...

Semiclassical results are usually expected to be valid in the semiclassical regime. An interesting question is, in models in which appropriate effective Planck constants can be introduced, to what extent will a semiclassical prediction stay valid when the effective Planck constant is increased? In this paper, we numerically study this problem, focusing on semiclassical predictions for the decay of the quantum Loschmidt echo in deep quantum regions. Our numerical simulations, ...

Quantum states extended over a large volume in phase space have oscillations from quantum interferences in their Wigner distribution on scales smaller than $\hbar$ [W.H. Zurek, Nature {\bf 412}, 712 (2001)]. We investigate the influence of those sub-Planck scale structures on the sensitivity to an external perturbation of the state's time evolution. While we do find an accelerated decay of the Loschmidt Echo for an extended state in comparison to a localized wavepacket, the a...

The Loschmidt echo (LE) measures the ability of a system to return to the initial state after a forward quantum evolution followed by a backward perturbed one. It has been conjectured that the echo of a classically chaotic system decays exponentially, with a decay rate given by the minimum between the width $\Gamma$ of the local density of states and the Lyapunov exponent. As the perturbation strength is increased one obtains a cross-over between both regimes. These predictio...
