These notes are from a series of lectures given at the Universidad de Los Andes in Bogot\'a, Colombia on some topics of current interest in quantum information. While they aim to be self-contained, they are necessarily incomplete and idiosyncratic in their coverage. For a more thorough introduction to the subject, we recommend one of the textbooks by Nielsen and Chuang or by Wilde, or the lecture notes of Mermin, Preskill or Watrous. Our notes by contrast are meant to be a re...

In this paper, we use singularity theory to study the entanglement nature of pure three-qutrit systems. We first consider the algebraic variety $X$ of separable three-qutrit states within the projective Hilbert space $\mathbb{P}(\mathcal{H}) = \mathbb{P}^{26}$. Given a quantum pure state $|\varphi\rangle\in \mathbb{P}(\mathcal{H})$ we define the $X_\varphi$-hypersuface by cutting $X$ with a hyperplane $H_\varphi$ defined by the linear form $\langle\varphi|$ (the $X_\varphi$-h...

We provide a classification of entangled states that uses new discrete entanglement invariants. The invariants are defined by algebraic properties of linear maps associated with the states. We prove a theorem on a correspondence between the invariants and sets of equivalent classes of entangled states. The new method works for an arbitrary finite number of finite-dimensional state subspaces. As an application of the method, we considered a large selection of cases of three su...

In the past decades, quantum entanglement has been recognized to be the basic resource in quantum information theory. A fundamental need is then the understanding its qualification and its quantification: Is the quantum state entangled, and if it is, then how much entanglement is carried by that? These questions introduce the topics of separability criteria and entanglement measures, both of which are based on the issue of classification of multipartite entanglement. In this ...

This paper explores the fundamental relationship between the geometry of entanglement and von Neumann entropy, shedding light on the intricate nature of quantum correlations. We provide a comprehensive overview of entanglement, highlighting its crucial role in quantum mechanics. Our focus centers on the connection between entanglement, von Neumann entropy, a measure of the information content within quantum systems and the geometry of composite Hilbert spaces. We discuss vari...

We present a review of the problem of finding out whether a quantum state of two or more parties is entangled or separable. After a formal definition of entangled states, we present a few criteria for identifying entangled states and introduce some entanglement measures. We also provide a classification of entangled states with respect to their usefulness in quantum dense coding, and present some aspects of multipartite entanglement.

Quantum entanglement in multipartite systems cannot be shared freely. In order to illuminate basic rules of entanglement sharing between qubits we introduce a concept of an entangled structure (graph) such that each qubit of a multipartite system is associated with a point (vertex) while a bi-partite entanglement between two specific qubits is represented by a connection (edge) between these points. We prove that any such entangled structure can be associated with a pure stat...

We propose a new approach to the geometry of the four-qubit entanglement classes depending on parameters. More precisely, we use invariant theory and algebraic geometry to describe various stratifications of the Hilbert space by SLOCC invariant algebraic varieties. The normal forms of the four-qubit classification of Verstraete {\em et al.} are interpreted as dense subsets of components of the dual variety of the set of separable states and an algorithm based on the invariant...

From the consideration of measuring bipartite mixed states by separable pure states, we introduce algebraic sets in complex projective spaces for bipartite mixed states as the degenerating locus of the measurement. These algebraic sets are independent of the eigenvalues and only measure the "position" of eigenvectors of bipartite mixed states. They are nonlocal invariants ie., remaining invariant after local unitary transformations. The algebraic sets have to be the sum of th...
