The scattering of massless waves of helicity $|h|=0,\frac{1}{2},1$ in Schwarzschild and Kerr backgrounds is revisited in the long-wavelenght regime. Using a novel description of such backgrounds in terms of gravitating massive particles, we compute classical wave scattering in terms of $2\to 2$ QFT amplitudes in flat space, to all orders in spin. The results are Newman-Penrose amplitudes which are in direct correspondence with solutions of the Regge-Wheeler/Teukolsky equation...

The light-like limit of the Kerr gravitational field relative to a distant observer moving rectilinearly in an arbitrary direction is an impulsive plane gravitational wave with a singular point on its wave front. By colliding particles with this wave we show that they have the same focussing properties as high speed particles scattered by the original black hole. By colliding photons with the gravitational wave we show that there is a circular disk, centered on the singular p...

We investigate the problem of scattering and conversion of monochromatic planar gravitational and electromagnetic waves impinging upon a Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole using a Regge pole description, i.e., a complex angular momentum approach. For this purpose, we first compute numerically the Regge pole spectrum for various charge-to-mass ratio configurations. We then derive an asymptotic expressions for the lowest Regge poles, and by considering Bohr-Sommerfeld-type quantiz...

We investigate the scattering of a massless scalar field by a Kerr-Newman black hole, considering the case of on-axis incidence. We use the partial wave method to find numerical results for the scattering cross section, which we compare with classical and semiclassical analytical results, obtaining excellent agreement. We present a selection of plots for different values of the black hole parameters.

Black holes are a paradigm in nowadays physics, and are expected to be hosted at the center of galaxies. Supermassive galactic black holes are not isolated, and their surroundings play crucial roles in many observational features. The absorption and scattering of fields by isolated black holes have been vastly studied, allowing the understanding of many phenomenological features. However, as far as we are aware, a study of the influence of the presence of matter surrounding b...

We consider the scattering of a low-frequency gravitational wave by a massive compact body in vacuum. We apply partial-wave methods to compute amplitudes for the helicity-conserving and helicity-reversing contributions to the cross section, accurate to first order in $M\omega$. Contrary to previous claims, we find that the partial-wave cross section agrees with the cross section derived via perturbation-theory methods.

We study gravitational absorption effects using effective on-shell scattering amplitudes. We develop an in-in probability-based framework involving plane- and partial-wave coherent states for the incoming wave to describe the interaction of the wave with a black hole or another compact object. We connect this framework to a simplified single-quantum analysis. The basic ingredients are mass-changing three-point amplitudes, which model the leading absorption effects and a spect...

We study the time-independent scattering of a planar gravitational wave propagating in the curved spacetime of a compact body with a polytropic equation of state. We begin by considering the geometric-optics limit, in which the gravitational wave propagates along null geodesics of the spacetime; we show that a wavefront passing through a neutron star of tenuity $R/M = 6$ will be focussed at a cusp caustic near the star's surface. Next, using the linearized Einstein Field Equa...

Accurate and powerful computational methods developed by the author for the wave scattering by black holes allow to obtain the highly non trivial total absorption spectrum of the Black Hole. As well as partial wave phase shifts and cross sections (elastic and inelastic), the angular distribution of absorbed and scattered waves, and the Hawking emission rates. The exact total absorption spectrum of waves by the Black Hole has as a function of frequency a remarkable oscillatory...
