In this paper we prove that every set $A\subset\mathbb{Z}$ satisfying the inequality $\sum_{x}\min(1_A*1_A(x),t)\le(2+\delta)t|A|$ for $t$ and $\delta$ in suitable ranges, then $A$ must be very close to an arithmetic progression. We prove that any multiplicative subgroup G of the prime field f_p with |G| < p^{1/2} satisfies |3G| \gg |G|^2 / \log |G|. Also, we obtain a bound for the multiplicative energy of any nonzero shift of G, namely E^* (G+x) \ll |G|^2 log |G|, where x is an arbitrary nonzero residue.

We discuss a statistical variant of Ruzsa's covering lemma and use it to show that if G is an Abelian group of bounded exponent and A in G has |A+A| < K|A| then the subgroup generated by A has size at most exp(O(K log^22K))|A|, where the constant in the big-O depends on the exponent of the group only.

We show that a finite set of integers $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}$ with $|A+A| \le K |A|$ contains a large piece $X \subseteq A$ with Fre\u{i}man dimension $O(\log K)$, where large means $|A|/|X| \ll \exp(O(\log^2 K))$.
