We give an overview of several of the mathematical works of Gilles Lachaud and provide a historical context. This is interspersed with some personal anecdotes highlighting many facets of his personality.

We give a general overview of the influence of William Thurston on the French mathematical school and we show how some of the major problems he solved are rooted in the French mathematical tradition. At the same time, we survey some of Thurston's major results and their impact. The final version of this paper will appear in the Surveys of the European Mathematical Society.

So far, the most magnificent breakthrough in mathematics in the 21st century is the Geometrization Theorem, a bold conjecture by William Thurston (generalizing Poincar\'e's Conjecture) and proved by Grigory Perelman, based on the program suggested by Richard Hamilton. In this survey article, we will explain the statement of this result, also presenting some examples of how it can be used to obtain interesting results in differential geometry.

This thesis opens with an introductory discussion, where the reader is gently led to the world of topological combinatorics, and, where the results of this Habilitationsschrift are portrayed against the backdrop of the broader philosophy of the subject. That introduction is followed by 5 chapters, where the main body of research is presented, and 4 appendices, where various standard tools and notations, which we use throughout the text, are collected.

Egbert Brieskorn died on July 11, 2013, a few days after his 77th birthday. He was an impressive personality who has left a lasting impression on all who knew him, whether inside or outside of mathematics. Brieskorn was a great mathematician, but his interests, his knowledge, and activities ranged far beyond mathematics. In this contribution, which is strongly influenced by many years of personal connectedness of the authors with Brieskorn, we try to give a deeper insight int...
