BPS quivers for N=2 SU(N) gauge theories are derived via geometric engineering from derived categories of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds. While the outcome is in agreement of previous low energy constructions, the geometric approach leads to several new results. An absence of walls conjecture is formulated for all values of N, relating the field theory BPS spectrum to large radius D-brane bound states. Supporting evidence is presented as explicit computations of BPS degeneracies...

We demonstrate that $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric non-Abelian gauge theories have towers of BPS particles obeying a Regge relation, $J \sim m^{2},$ between their angular momenta, $J,$ and their masses, $m$. For $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theories, we estimate the slope of these Regge trajectories using a non-relativistic quiver quantum mechanics model. Along the way, we also prove various structure theorems for the quiver moduli spaces that appear in the calculation.

We show that the BPS spectrum of pure SU(3) four-dimensional super Yang-Mills with N=2 supersymmetry exhibits a surprising phenomenon: there are regions of the Coulomb branch where the growth of the BPS degeneracies with the charge is exponential. We show this using spectral networks and independently using wall-crossing formulae and quiver methods. The computations using spectral networks provide a very nontrivial example of how these networks determine the four-dimensional ...

The BPS spectrum of certain N=2 supersymmetric field theories can be determined algebraically by studying the representation theory of BPS quivers. We introduce methods based on BPS quivers to study line defects. The presence of a line defect opens up a new BPS sector: framed BPS states can be bound to the defect. The defect can be geometrically described in terms of laminations on a curve. To a lamination we associate certain elements of the Leavitt path algebra of the BPS q...

We apply ideas that have appeared in the study of D-branes on Calabi-Yau compactifications to the derivation of the BPS spectrum of field theories. In particular, we identify an orbifold point whose fractional branes can be thought of as ``partons'' of the BPS spectrum of N=2 pure SU(N) SYM. We derive the BPS spectrum and lines of marginal stability branes near that orbifold, and compare our results with the spectrum of the field theories.

We review M-theory description of 4d N=2 SQCD. Configurations of M-theory fivebranes relevant to describe the moduli spaces of the Coulomb and Higgs branches are studied using the Taub-NUT geometry. Minimal area membranes related with the BPS states of N=2 SQCD are given explicitly. They almost saturate the BPS bounds. The deviation from the bounds is due to their boundary condition constrained by the fivebrane. The electric-magnetic duality at the baryonic branch root is als...

This work is devoted to a study of some of the non-perturbative aspects of superstring theory that have come within reach thanks to dualities. The first chapter gives a non-technical zero-equation introduction to these developments intended for readers with a knowledge of quantum field theory (and french). The second chapter introduces the non-perturbative dualities that have been observed in gauge and supergravity theories as well as the non-perturbative BPS spectrum, and pr...

We conjecture a precise relationship between the Schur limit of the superconformal index of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ field theories, which counts local operators, and the spectrum of BPS particles on the Coulomb branch. We verify this conjecture for the special case of free field theories, $\mathcal{N}=2$ QED, and $SU(2)$ gauge theory coupled to fundamental matter. Assuming the validity of our proposal, we compute the Schur index of all Argyres-Douglas theories. Our a...

We study the BPS particle spectrum of five-dimensional superconformal field theories (SCFTs) on $\mathbb{R}^4\times S^1$ with one-dimensional Coulomb branch, by means of their associated BPS quivers. By viewing these theories as arising from the geometric engineering within M-theory, the quivers are naturally associated to the corresponding local Calabi-Yau threefold. We show that the symmetries of the quiver, descending from the symmetries of the Calabi-Yau geometry, togethe...

It was observed recently, that the low energy effective action of the four-dimensional supersymmetric theories may be obtained as a certain limit of M Theory. From this point of view, the BPS states correspond to the minimal area membranes ending on the M Theory fivebrane. We prove that for the configuration, corresponding to the SU(2) Super Yang-Mills theory, the BPS spectrum is correctly reproduced, and develop techniques for analyzing the BPS spectrum in more general cases...
