A note on the multiplicative structure of an additively shifted product set, AA+1

We prove new results on additive properties of finite sets $A$ with small multiplicative doubling $|AA|\leq M|A|$ in the category of real/complex sets as well as multiplicative subgroups in the prime residue field. The improvements are based on new combinatorial lemmata, which may be of independent interest. We prove that, for any finite set $A \subset \mathbb Q$ with $|AA| \leq K|A|$ and any positive integer $k$, the $k$-fold product set of the shift $A+1$ satisfies the bound $$| \{(a_1+1)(a_2+1) \cdots (a_k+1) : a_i \in A \}| \geq \frac{|A|^k}{(8k^4)^{kK}}. $$ This result is essentially optimal when $K$ is of the order $c\log|A|$, for a sufficiently small constant $c=c(k)$. This paper gives an improved sum-product estimate for subsets of a finite field whose order is not prime. It is shown, under certain conditions, that $$\max\{|A+A|,|A\cdot{A}|\}\gg{\frac{|A|^{12/11}}{(\log_2|A|)^{5/11}}}.$$ This new estimate matches, up to a logarithmic factor, the current best known bound obtained over prime fields by Rudnev (\cite{mishaSP}).

In our paper we study multiplicative properties of difference sets $A-A$ for large sets $A \subseteq \mathbb{Z}/q\mathbb{Z}$ in the case of composite $q$. We obtain a quantitative version of a result of A. Fish about the structure of the product sets $(A-A)(A-A)$. Also, we show that the multiplicative covering number of any difference set is always small.

Let $F_p$ be the field of a prime order $p.$ For a subset $A\subset F_p$ we consider the product set $A(A+1).$ This set is an image of $A\times A$ under the polynomial mapping $f(x,y)=xy+x:F_p\times F_p\to F_p.$ In the present paper we show that if $|A|<p^{1/2},$ then $$ |A(A+1)|\ge |A|^{106/105+o(1)}.$$ If $|A|>p^{2/3},$ then we prove that $$|A(A+1)|\gg \sqrt{p |A|}$$ and show that this is the optimal in general settings bound up to the implied constant. We show that a large multiplicative subgroup of a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ cannot be decomposed into $A+A$ or $A+B+C$ nontrivially. We also find new families of multiplicative subgroups that cannot be decomposed as the sum of two sets nontrivially. In particular, our results extensively generalize the results of S\'{a}rk\"{o}zy and Shkredov on the additive decomposition of the set of quadratic residues modulo a prime.

Let $\mathbb{F}_p$ be the field of a prime order $p.$ It is known that for any integer $N\in [1,p]$ one can construct a subset $A\subset\mathbb{F}_p$ with $|A|= N$ such that $$ \max\{|A+A|, |AA|\}\ll p^{1/2}|A|^{1/2}. $$ In the present paper we prove that if $A\subset \mathbb{F}_p$ with $|A|>p^{2/3},$ then $$ \max\{|A+A|, |AA|\}\gg p^{1/2}|A|^{1/2}. $$

We prove that if $G$ is an Abelian group and $A_1,\ldots,A_k \subseteq G$ satisfy $m A_i=G$ (the $m$-fold sumset), then $A_1+\ldots+A_k=G$ provided that $k \ge c_m \log n$. This generalizes a result of Alon, Linial, and Meshulam [Additive bases of vector spaces over prime fields. J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 57(2):203--210, 1991] regarding the so called additive bases.
