We prove some new bounds for the size of the maximal dissociated subset of structured (having small sumset, large energy and so on) subsets A of an abelian group.

We develop the theory of the additive dimension ${\rm dim} (A)$, i.e. the size of a maximal dissociated subset of a set $A$. It was shown that the additive dimension is closely connected with the growth of higher sumsets $nA$ of our set $A$. We develop a new method leading the structure of finite subsets S and T of an abelian group with $|S+T|\le |S|+|T|$. We show also how to recover the known results in this area in a relatively short space.

In this paper we discuss some of the key properties of sum-free subsets of abelian groups. Our discussion has been designed with a broader readership in mind, and is hence not overly technical. We consider answers to questions like: how many sum-free subsets are there in a given abelian group $G$? what are its sum-free subsets of maximum cardinality? what is the maximum cardinality of these sum-free subsets? what does a typical sum-free subset of $G$ looks like? among others.

Let $G$ be a finite abelian group and $A$ be a subset of $G$. We say that $A$ is complete if every element of $G$ can be represented as a sum of different elements of $A$. In this paper, we study the following question: {\it What is the structure of a large incomplete set ?} The typical answer is that such a set is essentially contained in a maximal subgroup. As a by-product, we obtain a new proof for several earlier results.

We show that, in contrast to the integers setting, almost all even order abelian groups $G$ have exponentially fewer maximal sum-free sets than $2^{\mu(G)/2}$, where $\mu(G)$ denotes the size of a largest sum-free set in $G$. This confirms a conjecture of Balogh, Liu, Sharifzadeh and Treglown.

We discuss several questions concerning sum-free sets in groups, raised by Erd\H{o}s in his survey "Extremal problems in number theory" (Proceedings of the Symp. Pure Math. VIII AMS) published in 1965. We study the relations between several notions of dimension for an additive set, some of which are well-known and some of which are more recent, appearing for instance in work of Schoen and Shkredov. We obtain bounds for the ratios between these dimensions by improving an inequality of Lev and Yuster, and we show that these bounds are asymptotically sharp, using in particular the existence of large dissociated subsets of $\{0,1\}^n\subset \mathbb{Z}^n$.

Let G be an arbitrary finite group and let S and T be two subsets such that |S|>1, |T|>1, and |TS|< |T|+|S|< |G|-1. We show that if |S|< |G|-4|G|^{1/2}+1 then either S is a geometric progression or there exists a non-trivial subgroup H such that either |HS|< |S|+|H| or |SH| < |S|+|H|.
