A finite one-dimensional microscopic model of a superfulid is presented. The model consists of interacting Bose particles with an additional impurity particle confined to a ring. Both semiclassical and exact quantum calculations reveal dissipationless motion of impurity with increased effective mass due to its interaction with the excitations of Bose fluid. It is shown that both the excitation spectrum of Bose fluid and the excitation spectrum of impurity can be analyzed usin...

We study impurities in integrable models from the viewpoint of generalized hydrodynamics (GHD). An impurity can be thought of as a boundary condition for the GHD equation, relating the state on the left and right side. We find that in interacting models it is not possible to disentangle incoming and outgoing states, which means that it is not possible to think of scattering as a mapping which maps the incoming state to the outgoing state. We then introduce a novel class of im...

We show that the breaking of integrability in the fundamental one-dimensional model of bosons with contact interactions has consequences on the stationary correlation properties of the system. We calculate the energies and correlation functions of the integrable Lieb-Liniger case, comparing the exact Bethe-ansatz solution with a corresponding Jastrow ansatz. Then we examine the non-integrable case of different interaction strengths between each pair of atoms by means of a var...

Various sophisticated approximation methods exist for the description of quantum many-body systems. It was realized early on that the theoretical description can simplify considerably in one-dimensional systems and various exact solutions exist. The focus in this introductory paper is on fermionic systems and the emergence of the Luttinger liquid concept.

We study a one-dimensional interacting quantum liquid hosting a pair of mobile impurities causing backscattering. We determine the effective retarded interaction between the two impurities mediated by the liquid. We show that for strong backscattering this interaction gives rise to resonances and antiresonances in the finite-frequency mobility of the impurity pair. At the antiresonances, the two impurities remain at rest even when driven by a (small) external force. At the re...

We study the dynamics of a heavy particle of mass $M$ moving in a one-dimensional repulsively interacting Fermi gas. The Fermi gas is described using the Luttinger model and bosonization. By transforming to a frame co-moving with the heavy particle, we map the model onto a generalized ``quantum impurity problem". A renormalization group calculation reveals a crossover from strong to weak coupling upon scaling down in temperature. Above the crossover temperature scale $T^*=(m/...

Many fundamental one-dimensional lattice models such as the Heisenberg or the Hubbard model are integrable. For these microscopic models, parameters in the Luttinger liquid theory can often be fixed and parameter-free results at low energies for many physical quantities such as dynamical correlation functions obtained where exact results are still out of reach. Quantum integrable models thus provide an important testing ground for low-energy Luttinger liquid physics. They are...

A few exactly solvable interacting quantum many-body problems with impurities were previously reported to exhibit unusual features such as non-localization and absence of backscattering. In this work we consider the use of these integrable impurities as boundary conditions in the framework of linear transport problems. We first show that such impurities enhance the density of states at the Fermi surface, thus increasing the effective system size. The study of the real time-dy...

Luttinger liquid theory accounts for the low energy boson excitations of one-dimensional quantum liquids, but disregards the high energy excitations. The most important high energy excitations are holes which have infinite lifetime at zero temperature. At finite temperatures they can be scattered by thermally excited bosons. We describe the interaction of the hole with the bosons by treating it as a mobile impurity in a Luttinger liquid. This approach enables us to evaluate t...

We develop a theory of viscous dissipation in one-dimensional single-component quantum liquids at low temperatures. Such liquids are characterized by a single viscosity coefficient, the bulk viscosity. We show that for a generic interaction between the constituent particles this viscosity diverges in the zero-temperature limit. In the special case of integrable models, the viscosity is infinite at any temperature, which can be interpreted as a breakdown of the hydrodynamic de...
