We study two mobile bosonic impurities immersed in a one-dimensional optical lattice and interacting with a bosonic bath. We employ the exact diagonalization method for small periodic lattices to study stationary properties and dynamics. We consider the branch of repulsive interactions that induce the formation of bound impurities, akin to the bipolaron problem. A comprehensive study of ground-state and low-energy properties is presented, including the characterization of the...

Universality is a powerful concept in physics, allowing one to construct physical descriptions of systems that are independent of the precise microscopic details or energy scales. A prime example is the Fermi gas with unitarity limited interactions, whose universal properties are relevant to systems ranging from atomic gases at microkelvin temperatures to the inner crust of neutron stars. Here we address the question of whether unitary Bose systems can possess a similar unive...

We consider the quantum mechanical many-body problem of a single impurity particle immersed in a weakly interacting Bose gas. The impurity interacts with the bosons via a two-body potential. We study the Hamiltonian of this system in the mean-field limit and rigorously show that, at low energies, the problem is well described by the Fr\"ohlich polaron model.

The properties of impurity immersed in the dilute $D$-dimensional Bose gas at temperatures close to the second-order phase transition point are considered. Particularly by means of the $1/N$-expansion we calculated the leading-order polaron energy and the damping rate in the limit of vanishing boson-boson interaction. It is show that the perturbative effective mass and the quasiparticle residue diverge logarithmically in the long-length limit signalling the non-analytic behav...

Recently, two independent experiments reported the observation of long-lived polarons in a Bose-Einstein condensate, providing an excellent setting to study the generic scenario of a mobile impurity interacting with a quantum reservoir. Here, we expand the experimental analysis by disentangling the effects of trap inhomogeneities and the many-body continuum in one of these experiments. This makes it possible to extract the energy of the polaron at a well-defined density as a ...

A neutral impurity atom immersed in a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) can have a bound ground state in which the impurity is self-localized. In this small polaron-like state, the impurity distorts the density of the surrounding BEC, thereby creating the self-trapping potential minimum. We describe the self-localization in a strong coupling approach.

The Bose polaron has attracted theoretical and experimental interest because the mobile impurity is surrounded by a bath that undergoes a superfluid-to-normal phase transition. Although many theoretical works have studied this system in its ground state, only few analyze its behavior at finite temperature. We have studied the effect of temperature on a Bose polaron system performing ab-initio Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations. This method is able to approach the critical ...

We study the properties of Bose polarons in two dimensions using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. Results for the binding energy, the effective mass, and the quasiparticle residue are reported for a typical strength of interactions in the gas and for a wide range of impurity-gas coupling strengths. A lower and an upper branch of the quasiparticle exist. The lower branch corresponds to an attractive polaron and spans from the regime of weak coupling where the impurity acts as a...

We present a novel approach to the Bose polaron based on the notion of quantum groups, also known as $q$-deformed Lie algebras. In this approach, a mobile impurity can be depicted as a deformation of the Lie algebra of the bosonic creation and annihilation operators of the bath, in which the impurity is immersed. Accordingly, the Bose polaron can be described as a bath of noninteracting $q$-deformed bosons, which allows us to provide an analytical formulation of the Bose pola...

This article gives a detailed presentation of the authors' recent results on the ground state properties of the Bose gas. It is a much expanded version of a talk given by one of the authors (E.H.L.) at the conference "Perspectives in Analysis" at the KTH, Stockholm, June 23, 2003. It is based on, but supersedes, the article math-ph/0204027.
