We revisit the question of predicting both Hodge numbers $h^{1,1}$ and $h^{2,1}$ of complete intersection Calabi-Yau (CICY) 3-folds using machine learning (ML), considering both the old and new datasets built respectively by Candelas-Dale-Lutken-Schimmrigk / Green-H\"ubsch-Lutken and by Anderson-Gao-Gray-Lee. In real world applications, implementing a ML system rarely reduces to feed the brute data to the algorithm. Instead, the typical workflow starts with an exploratory dat...

We briefly overview how, historically, string theory led theoretical physics first to precise problems in algebraic and differential geometry, and thence to computational geometry in the last decade or so, and now, in the last few years, to data science. Using the Calabi-Yau landscape -- accumulated by the collaboration of physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists over the last 4 decades -- as a starting-point and concrete playground, we review some recent progress i...

We present a numerical computation, based on neural network techniques, of the physical Yukawa couplings in a heterotic string theory compactification on a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold with non-standard embedding. The model belongs to a large class of heterotic line bundle models that have previously been identified and whose low-energy spectrum precisely matches that of the MSSM plus fields uncharged under the Standard Model group. The relevant quantities for the calculation,...

We use reinforcement learning as a means of constructing string compactifications with prescribed properties. Specifically, we study heterotic SO(10) GUT models on Calabi-Yau three-folds with monad bundles, in search of phenomenologically promising examples. Due to the vast number of bundles and the sparseness of viable choices, methods based on systematic scanning are not suitable for this class of models. By focusing on two specific manifolds with Picard numbers two and thr...

The immensity of the string landscape and the difficulty of identifying solutions that match the observed features of particle physics have raised serious questions about the predictive power of string theory. Modern methods of optimisation and search can, however, significantly improve the prospects of constructing the standard model in string theory. In this paper we scrutinise a corner of the heterotic string landscape consisting of compactifications on Calabi-Yau three-fo...

In these lecture notes, we survey the landscape of Calabi-Yau threefolds, and the use of machine learning to explore it. We begin with the compact portion of the landscape, focusing in particular on complete intersection Calabi-Yau varieties (CICYs) and elliptic fibrations. Non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds are manifest in Type II superstring theories, they arise as representation varieties of quivers, used to describe gauge theories in the bulk familiar four dimensions. Final...

We explicitly construct the largest dataset to date of heterotic vacua arising from stable vector bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds. Focusing on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds with spectral cover bundles, we show that the number of heterotic models with non-zero number of generations is finite. We classify these models according to the complex base of their Calabi-Yau threefold and to the unification gauge group that they preserve in four dimensions. This database o...

We use methods from topological data analysis to study the topological features of certain distributions of string vacua. Topological data analysis is a multi-scale approach used to analyze the topological features of a dataset by identifying which homological characteristics persist over a long range of scales. We apply these techniques in several contexts. We analyze N=2 vacua by focusing on certain distributions of Calabi-Yau varieties and Landau-Ginzburg models. We then t...

We review advancements in deep learning techniques for complete intersection Calabi-Yau (CICY) 3- and 4-folds, with the aim of understanding better how to handle algebraic topological data with machine learning. We first discuss methodological aspects and data analysis, before describing neural networks architectures. Then, we describe the state-of-the art accuracy in predicting Hodge numbers. We include new results on extrapolating predictions from low to high Hodge numbers,...

It is well known that there are a great many apparently consistent vacua of string theory. We draw attention to the fact that there appear to be very few Calabi--Yau manifolds with the Hodge numbers h^{11} and h^{21} both small. Of these, the case (h^{11}, h^{21})=(3,3) corresponds to a manifold on which a three generation heterotic model has recently been constructed. We point out also that there is a very close relation between this manifold and several familiar manifolds i...
