This paper surveys the methods that have been used to attack the conjecture, still open, that an abelian variety over a characteristic $0$ field with finitely generated Galois group is always of infinite rank.

This is a survey on appearances of reflection groups, real and complex, in algebraic geometry. We also include a brief introduction into the theory of reflection groups.

It is known that for any elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ and any integer $m$ co-prime to $30,$ the induced Galois representation $\rho_{E,m}: \text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}) \longrightarrow \text{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z})$ is surjective if and only if $\rho_{E,\ell}$ is surjective for any prime $\ell|m.$ In this article, we shall discuss some generalizations, applications, and variants of this phenomenon.
We address two interrelated problems concerning permutation of roots of univariate polynomials whose coefficients depend on parameters. First, we compute the Galois group of polynomials $\varphi(x)\in\mathbb{C}[t_1,\cdots,t_k][x]$ over $\mathbb{C}(t_1,\cdots,t_k)$. Provided that the corresponding multivariate polynomial $\varphi(x,t_1,\cdots,t_k)$ is generic with respect to its support $A\subset \mathbb{Z}^{k+1}$, we determine the latter Galois group for any $A$. Second, we d...

We present a family of algorithms for computing the Galois group of a polynomial defined over a $p$-adic field. Apart from the "naive" algorithm, these are the first general algorithms for this task. As an application, we compute the Galois groups of all totally ramified extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_2$ of degrees 18, 20 and 22, tables of which are available online.

This is a survey paper about a selection of results in complex algebraic geometry that appeared in the recent and less recent litterature, and in which rational homogeneous spaces play a prominent r{\^o}le. This selection is largely arbitrary and mainly reflects the interests of the author.

For many finite groups, the Inverse Galois Problem can be approached through modular/automorphic Galois representations. This is a report explaining the basic strategy, ideas and methods behind some recent results. It focusses mostly on the 2-dimensional case and underlines in particular the importance of understanding coefficient fields.

Proposed is a program for what we call Geometric Arithmetic, based on our works on non-abelian zeta functions and non-abelian class field theory. Key words are stability and adelic intersection-cohomology theory.

Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve, let $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ be a fixed algebraic closure of $\mathbb{Q}$, and let $G_{\mathbb{Q}}=\text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ be the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}$. The action of $G_{\mathbb{Q}}$ on the adelic Tate module of $E$ induces the adelic Galois representation $\rho_E\colon G_{\mathbb{Q}} \to \text{GL}(2,\widehat{\mathbb{Z}}).$ The goal of this paper is to explain how the image of $\rho_E$ can be sma...

Let $k$ be a field, let $G$ be a reductive group, and let $V$ be a linear representation of $G$. Let $V//G = Spec(Sym(V^*))^G$ denote the geometric quotient and let $\pi: V \to V//G$ denote the quotient map. Arithmetic invariant theory studies the map $\pi$ on the level of $k$-rational points. In this article, which is a continuation of the results of our earlier paper "Arithmetic invariant theory", we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a rational element of $V//...
