In this paper we prove new bounds for sums of convex or concave functions. Specifically, we prove that for all $A,B \subseteq \mathbb R$ finite sets, and for all $f,g$ convex or concave functions, we have $$|A + B|^{38}|f(A) + g(B)|^{38} \gtrsim |A|^{49}|B|^{49}.$$ This result can be used to obtain bounds on a number of two-variable expanders of interest, as well as to the asymmetric sum-product problem. We also adjust our technique to also prove the three-variable expans...

We improve a result of Solymosi on sum-products in R, namely, we prove that max{|A+A|,|AA|}\gg |A|^{4/3+c}, where c>0 is an absolute constant. New lower bounds for sums of sets with small product set are found. Previous results are improved effectively for sets A from R with |AA| \le |A|^{4/3}.

Let $P \subset \mathbb R^2$ be a point set with cardinality $N$. We give an improved bound for the number of dot products determined by $P$, proving that, \[ |\{ p \cdot q :p,q \in P \}| \gg N^{2/3+c}. \] A crucial ingredient in the proof of this bound is a new superquadratic expander involving products and shifts. We prove that, for any finite set $X \subset \mathbb R$, there exist $z,z' \in X$ such that \[ \left|\frac{(zX+1)^{(2)}(z'X+1)^{(2)}}{(zX+1)^{(2)}(z'X+1)}\right| \...

The basic theme of this paper is the fact that if $A$ is a finite set of integers, then the sum and product sets cannot both be small. A precise formulation of this fact is Conjecture 1 below due to Erd\H os-Szemer\'edi [E-S]. (see also [El], [T], and [K-T] for related aspects.) Only much weaker results or very special cases of this conjecture are presently known. One approach consists of assuming the sum set $A + A$ small and then deriving that the product set $AA$ is large ...

Let $f$ be a smooth real function with strictly monotone first $k$ derivatives. We show that for a finite set $A$, with $|A+A|\leq K|A|$, $|2^kf(A)-(2^k-1)f(A)|\gg_k |A|^{k+1-o(1)}/K^{O_k(1)}$. We deduce several new sum-product type implications, e.g. that $A+A$ being small implies unbounded growth for a many enough times iterated product set $A \cdots A$.

In this paper, we prove non-trivial estimates for the additive discretized energy of \[\sum_{c\in C} |\{(a_1, a_2, b_1, b_2)\in A^2\times B^2: |(a_1 +cb_1) - (a_2 + cb_2)|\le \delta\}|_{\delta},\] that depend on non-concentration conditions of the sets. As applications, we obtain a number of new results on the $\delta$-covering and on the Hausdorff dimensional version of the $A+cB$ problem. Our proofs introduce a novel approach that makes use of a combination of methods from ...

Let $A$ and $B$ be finite subsets of $\mathbb{C}$ such that $|B|=C|A|$. We show the following variant of the sum product phenomenon: If $|AB|<\alpha|A|$ and $\alpha \ll \log |A|$, then $|kA+lB|\gg |A|^k|B|^l$. This is an application of a result of Evertse, Schlickewei, and Schmidt on linear equations with variables taking values in multiplicative groups of finite rank, in combination with an earlier theorem of Ruzsa about sumsets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. As an application of the ca...

Combining Freiman's theorem with Balog-Szemeredi-Gowers theorem one can show that if an additive set has large additive energy, then a large piece of the set is contained in a generalized arithmetic progression of small rank and size. In this paper, we prove the above statement with the optimal bound for the rank of the progression. The proof strategy involves studying upper bounds for additive energy of subsets of R^d and Z^d.

In this note it is established that, for any finite set $A$ of real numbers, there exist two elements $a,b \in A$ such that $$|(a+A)(b+A)| \gg \frac{|A|^2}{\log |A|}.$$ In particular, it follows that $|(A+A)(A+A)| \gg \frac{|A|^2}{\log |A|}$. The latter inequality had in fact already been established in an earlier work of the author and Rudnev (arXiv:1203.6237), which built upon the recent developments of Guth and Katz (arXiv:1011.4105) in their work on the Erd\H{o}s dist...

In the paper we are studying some properties of subsets Q of sums of dissociated sets. The exact upper bound for the number of solutions of the following equation (1) q_1 + ... + q_p = q_{p+1} + ... + q_{2p}, q_i \in Q in groups F_2^n is found. Using our approach, we easily prove a recent result of J. Bourgain on sets of large exponential sums and obtain a tiny improvement of his theorem. Besides an inverse problem is considered in the article. Let Q be a set belonging a ...
