We investigate higher spin theories of gravity in three dimensions based on the gauge group SL(N,R)*SL(N,R). In these theories the usual diffeomorphism symmetry is enhanced to include higher spin gauge transformations under which traditional geometric notions of curvature and causality are no longer invariant. This implies, for example, that apparently singular geometries can be rendered smooth by a gauge transformation, much like the resolution of orbifold singularities in s...

We develop the BRST-BV approach to construct the general off-shell Lorentz covariant cubic, quartic, $e$-tic interaction vertices for irreducible higher spin fields on $d$-dimensional Minkowski space. We consider two different cases for interacting integer higher spin fields both with massless and with massive fields. The deformation procedure to find minimal (determined with help of generalized Hilbert space) BRST-BV action for interacting higher spin fields is based on the ...

These notes comprise a part of the introductory lectures on Higher Spin Theory presented in the Eighth Modave Summer School in Mathematical Physics. We construct free higher-spin theories and turn on interactions to find that inconsistencies show up in general. Interacting massless fields in flat space are in tension with gauge invariance and this leads to various no-go theorems. While massive fields exhibit superluminal propagation, appropriate non-minimal terms may cure suc...

We continue to investigate correspondences between, on the one hand, scattering amplitudes for massive higher-spin particles and gravitons in appropriate quantum-to-classical limits, and on the other hand, classical gravitational interactions of spinning black holes according to general relativity. We first construct an ansatz for a gravitational Compton amplitude, at tree level, constrained only by locality, crossing symmetry, unitarity and consistency with the linearized-Ke...

We consider in detail the most general cubic Lagrangian which describes an interaction between two identical higher spin fieldsin a triplet formulation with a scalar field, all fields having the same values of the mass. After performing the gauge fixing procedure we find that for the case of massive fields the gauge invariance does not guarantee the preservation of the correct number of propagating physical degrees of freedom. In order to get the correct number of degrees of ...

The recently established formalism of a worldline quantum field theory, which describes the classical scattering of massive bodies in Einstein gravity, is generalized up to quadratic order in spin -- for a pair of Kerr black holes revealing a hidden ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetry. The far-field time-domain waveform of the gravitational waves produced in such a spinning encounter is computed at leading order in the post-Minkowskian (weak field, but generic velocity) expansion,...

We review the recently developed general gauge invariant approach to Lagrangian construction for massive higher spin fields in Minkowski and AdS spaces of arbitrary dimension. Higher spin Lagrangian, describing the dynamics of the fields with any spin, is formulated with help of BRST-BFV operator in auxiliary Fock space. No off-shell constraints on the fields and gauge parameters are imposed. The construction is also applied to tensor higher spin fields with index symmetry co...

We develop the BRST approach to Lagrangian formulation for massive bosonic and massless fermionic higher spin fields on a flat space-time of arbitrary dimension. General procedure of gauge invariant Lagrangian construction describing the dynamics of the fields with any spin is given. No off-shell constraints on the fields (like tracelessness) and the gauge parameters are imposed. The procedure is based on construction of new representations for the closed algebras generated b...

Using BRST-BV formulation of relativistic dynamics, we study arbitrary spin massive and massless fields propagating in flat space. Generating functions of gauge invariant off-shell cubic interaction vertices for mixed-symmetry and totally symmetric fields are obtained. For the case of totally symmetric fields, we derive restrictions on the allowed values of spins and the number of derivatives, which provide a classification of cubic interaction vertices for such fields. As by...

We find exact spherically symmetric solution of 4d nonlinear bosonic higher-spin gauge theory, that preserves a quarter of supersymmetries of N=2 supersymmetric 4d higher-spin gauge theory. In the weak field regime it describes $AdS_4$ Schwarzschild black hole in the spin two sector along with non-zero massless fields of all integer spins.
