We calculate the masses of the low-lying states with quantum numbers $J^{PC}=0^{++},1^{--}$ in the Higgs and confinement regions of the three-dimensional SU(2) Higgs model, which plays an important r\^ole in the description of the thermodynamic properties of the standard model at finite temperatures. We extract the masses from correlation functions of gauge-invariant operators which are calculated by means of a lattice Monte Carlo simulation. The projection properties of our ...

We present our lattice studies of SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f$ = 8 degenerate fermions in the fundamental representation. Using nHYP-smeared staggered fermions we study finite-temperature transitions on lattice volumes as large as $L^3 \times N_t = 48^3 \times 24$, and the zero-temperature composite spectrum on lattice volumes up to $64^3 \times 128$. The spectrum indirectly indicates spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, but finite-temperature transitions with fixed $N_t \l...

A recent work (arXiv:1811.04930) proposed a SU(2) gauge theory for optimal doping criticality in the cuprate superconductors. The theory contains $N_h$ Higgs fields transforming under the adjoint representation of SU(2), with $N_h=1$ for the electron-doped cuprates, and $N_h=4$ for the hole-doped cuprates. We investigate the strong-coupling dynamics of this gauge theory, while ignoring the coupling to fermionic excitations. We integrate out the SU(2) gauge field in a strong-c...

We provide an extended lattice study of the SU(2) gauge theory coupled to one Dirac fermion flavour ($N_{\mathrm{f}} =1$) transforming in the adjoint representation as the continuum limit is approached. This investigation is supplemented by numerical results obtained for the SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermion flavours ($N_{\mathrm{f}} =2$) transforming in the adjoint representation, for which we perform numerical investigations at a single lattice spacing value, which ...

We are studying the $SU(3)$ gauge theory with 12 staggered fermions, searching for the endpoint of the line of first-order phase transitions in the mass--beta plane. This endpoint plays an important role in our understanding of the phase diagram of this model. Having found this endpoint with high statistics on a small lattice using unimproved staggered fermions, we are working to find it on larger lattices and with improved actions. For an action improved with nHYP-smeared st...

We study a lattice model of interacting Dirac fermions in $(2+1)$ dimension space-time with an SU(4) symmetry. While increasing interaction strength, this model undergoes a {\it continuous} quantum phase transition from the weakly interacting Dirac semimetal to a fully gapped and nondegenerate phase without condensing any Dirac fermion bilinear mass operator. This unusual mechanism for mass generation is consistent with recent studies of interacting topological insulators/sup...

We show how a strongly coupled lattice theory consisting of just fermions and gauge fields can exhibit a dynamical Higgs mechanism through the formation of a gauge invariant four fermion condensate. Furthermore, we argue that the resultant lattice Higgs phase may survive into the continuum limit.

An SU(2) gauge theory with two fermions transforming under the adjoint representation of the gauge group may appear conformal or almost conformal in the infrared. We use lattice simulations to study the spectrum of this theory and present results on the masses of several gauge singlet states as a function of the physical quark mass determined through the axial Ward identity and find indications of a change from chiral symmetry breaking to a phase consistent with conformal beh...

We apply Schroedinger functional methods to two gauge theories with fermions in two-index representations: the SU(3) theory with Nf=2 adjoint fermions, and the SU(4) theory with Nf=6 fermions in the two-index antisymmetric representation. Each theory is believed to lie near the bottom of the conformal window for its respective representation. In the SU(3) theory we find a small beta function in strong coupling but we cannot confirm or rule out an infrared fixed point. In the ...

We study two different SU(2) gauge-scalar theories in 3 and 4 spacetime dimensions. Firstly, we focus on the 3 dimensional SU(2) theory with multiple Higgs fields in the adjoint representation, that can be mapped to cuprate systems in condensed matter physics which host a rich phase diagram including high-Tc superconductivity. It has been proposed that the theory with 4 adjoint Higgs fields can be used to explain the physics of hole-doped cuprates for a wide range of paramete...
