We present the serendipitous discovery of 195 extragalactic globular clusters (GCs) in one of the deepest optical images ever obtained, a 126 orbit HST/ACS imaging study of the nearby Galactic GC NGC 6397. The distant GCs are all found surrounding a bright elliptical galaxy in the field, and are among the faintest objects detected in the image, with magnitudes 26 < F814W < 30. We measure the redshift of the parent elliptical galaxy, using GMOS on Gemini South, to be z = 0.089...

We examine the luminosity and B-I color distribution of globular clusters for three early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster using imaging data from the Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2 on the Hubble Space Telescope. The luminosity functions we derive are in most cases better than 50% complete down to B = 26.6. We find that the color distributions of globular clusters in the central region of NGC 1399 and its nearby neighbor NGC 1404 are bimodal and statistically indistinguisha...

We present a photometric investigation of the globular cluster population of NGC 1399, the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster, in Washington C and Kron R filters within a field of 36'x36'. This is the largest area around this galaxy ever studied with CCD photometry. The cluster system of NGC 1399 is found to extend further than 100 kpc away from the galaxy. The color distribution exhibits a pronounced bimodality. Within a radial distance of about 55 kpc, the red clusters ar...

We present multi-object spectroscopy of the inner zone of the globular cluster (GC) system associated with the intermediate-age merger remnant NGC 1316. Using the multi-object mode of the GMOS camera, we obtained spectra for 35 GCs. We find pieces of evidence that the innermost GCs of NGC 1316 rotate almost perpendicular to the stellar component of the galaxy. In a second stage, we determined ages, metallicities and {\alpha}-element abundances for each GC present in the sampl...

Luminous elliptical galaxies generally display a rich star cluster system, whose properties provide strong constraints on the physics of galaxy formation and evolution. Star cluster system studies, however, concentrate on galaxies located in nearby or rich galaxy clusters. We acquired deep B and I images of NGC 1600, a luminous elliptical in a galaxy group to study its star cluster system. The images were obtained with the Optical Imager at the SOAR telescope. The sample sele...

We have obtained Keck spectra of six candidate globular clusters (GCs) in the dynamically young elliptical galaxy NGC 3610, supplementing our previous Keck spectra of eight confirmed GCs (Strader et al. 2003). Five of our new candidates are confirmed to be GCs. Of the thirteen GCs, eleven are located within the K band effective radius of 7 kpc. Two of these thirteen clusters are found to be young (~ 2 Gyr) and very metal-rich ([Z/H] ~ +0.5), three are old and metal-poor, and ...

NGC 1380 is a lenticular galaxy located near the centre of the Fornax Cluster northeast of NGC 1399. The globular cluster system of this galaxy was previously studied only from the ground. Recent studies of similar early-type galaxies, specially lenticular ones, reveal the existence of star clusters that apparently break up the traditional open/globular cluster dichotomy. With higher quality photometry from HST/WFPC2 we study the star clusters in NGC 1380, measuring their mag...

We report the discovery of ancient massive merger events in the early-type galaxies NGC 1380 and NGC 1427, members of the Fornax galaxy cluster. Both galaxies have been observed by the MUSE IFU instrument on the VLT, as part of the Fornax3D project. By fitting recently-developed population-orbital superposition models to the observed surface brightness as well as stellar kinematic, age, and metallicity maps, we obtain the stellar orbits, age and metallicity distributions of e...

Observations of young star clusters in a variety of galaxies have been used to constrain basic properties related to star-formation, such as the fraction of stars found in clusters (Gam) and the shape of the cluster mass function. However, the results can depend heavily on the reliability of the cluster age-dating process and other assumptions. One of the biggest challenges for successful age-dating lies in breaking the age-reddening degeneracy, where older, dust-free cluster...

The giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1316 (Fornax A) is a well-studied member of the Fornax Cluster and a prolific producer of Type Ia supernovae, having hosted four observed events since 1980. Here we present detailed optical and near-infrared light curves of the spectroscopically normal SN 2006dd. These data are used, along with previously published photometry of the normal SN 1980N and SN 1981D, and the fast-declining, low-luminosity SN 2006mr, to compute independent estimates ...
