We present images of the recent galaxy merger NGC 3256 obtained with the WFPC2 of the Hubble Space Telescope in B and I filters. We show that there is a large population of more than 1,000 compact, bright blue objects in this galaxy within the 7 kpc x 7 kpc region studied. These objects have sizes, colors and luminosities like those expected for young Galactic globular clusters with ages ranging from a few to several hundred Myr. On this basis, we identify at least some fract...

We present moderate-resolution Keck spectra of nine candidate globular clusters in the possible merger-remnant elliptical galaxy NGC 3610. Eight of the objects appear to be bona fide globular clusters of NGC 3610. We find that two of the clusters belong to an old metal-poor population, five to an old metal-rich population, and only one to an intermediate-age metal-rich population. The estimated age of the intermediate-age cluster is 1-5 Gyr, which is in agreement with earlier...

We combine new Wide Field Camera~3 IR Channel (WFC3/IR) F160W (H) imaging data for NGC1399, the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster, with archival F475W (g), F606W (V), F814W (I), and F850LP (z) optical data from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS). The purely optical g-I, V-I, and g-z colors of NGC1399's rich globular cluster (GC) system exhibit clear bimodality, at least for magnitudes $I_814 > 21.5$. The optical-IR I-H color distribution appears unimodal, and this impre...

We present wide-field multiband photometry of globular cluster (GC) systems in NGC 1399, NGC 1404, and NGC 1387 located at the central region of the Fornax galaxy cluster. Observation was carried out through U, B, V, and I bands, which marks one of the widest and deepest U-band studies on extragalactic GC systems. The present U-band photometry enables us to significantly reduce the contamination by a factor of two for faint sources (Vo~23.5). The main results based on some 20...

We combine near-infrared photometry obtained with the VLT/ISAAC instrument and archival HST/WFPC2 optical images to determine VIK magnitudes and colours of globular clusters in two early-type galaxies, NGC 3115 and NGC 4365. The combination of near-IR and optical photometry provides a way to lift the age-metallicity degeneracy. For NGC 3115, the globular cluster colours reveal two major sub-populations, consistent with previous studies. By comparing the V-I, V-K colours of th...

We present new Hubble Space Telescope (HST)-NIC3, near-infrared H-band photometry of globular clusters (GC) around NGC 4365 and NGC 1399 in combination with archival HST-WCPC2 and ACS optical data. We find that NGC 4365 has a number of globular clusters with bluer optical colors than expected for their red optical to near-infrared colors and an old age. The only known way to explain these colors is with a significant population of intermediate-age (2-8 Gyr) clusters in this e...

SH2 has been described as an isolated HII-region, located about 6.5 arcmin south of the nucleus of NGC 1316 (Fornax A), a merger remnant in the the outskirts of the Fornax cluster of galaxies. We give a first, preliminary description of the stellar content and environment of this remarkable object. We used photometric data in the Washington system and HST photometry from the Hubble Legacy Archive for a morphological description and preliminary aperture photometry. Low-resolut...

We present an updated catalog of 1300 objects in the field of M31, including 670 likely star clusters of various types. Archival images were inspected to confirm cluster classifications where possible, but most of the classifications were based on spectra taken of ~1000 objects with the Hectospec fiber positioner and spectrograph on the 6.5m MMT. The spectra and images of young clusters are analyzed in detail in this paper. Ages, reddenings and masses of 140 young clusters ar...

We identified star clusters in archived HST/WFPC2 images of the merger and ultra-luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6240, with the aim of investigating whether star cluster properties (luminosity, age and mass) in such an extreme environment differ from those of clusters in less luminous starburst galaxies. We found 54 star clusters in all of the F450W, F547M and F814W exposures, of which 41 are located in the main body of NGC 6240 and 13 in the galactic tails. Given that only two ...

We present and interpret observations of atomic and molecular gas toward the southern elliptical galaxy NGC 1316 (Fornax A), a strong double-lobe radio source with a disturbed optical morphology that includes numerous shells and loops. The 12CO(1-0), 12CO(2-1), and HI observations were made with SEST and the VLA. CO emission corresponding to a total molecular hydrogen mass of 5x10^8 Msun was detected toward the central position as well as northwest and southeast of the nucleu...
