It is shown that galaxy cluster surveys selecting clusters by their X-ray luminosity effectively select by cluster mass. It is shown that a selection based solely on Abell galaxy richness is less efficient in terms of mass. Furthermore the empirical X-ray luminosity - gravitational mass relation and its scatter is quantified and the relation is compared to predicted relations.

In this work we show that combining different cluster data sets is a powerful tool to constrain both, the cosmology and cluster properties. We assume a model with 9 parameters and fit them to 5 cluster data sets. From that fit, we conclude that only low density universes are compatible with the previous data and we also get some interesting conclusions on the rest of parameters.

In this paper we discuss various possibilities of using X-ray observations to gain information about the large-scale structure of the Universe. We present the mass-X-ray observable scaling relationships for clusters of galaxies using the XMM-Newton cluster catalog of Snowden et al. Our results are roughly consistent with previous observational and theoretical work, with one major exception. We find 2-3 times the scatter around the best fit mass scaling relationships as expected from cluster simulations or seen in other observational studies. We outline main arguments in favor of cosmological X-ray surveys of galaxy clusters. We summarize recent advances in our understanding of cluster physics. After a short review of past surveys, we present the scientific motivations of the XMM Large Scale Structure survey. We further illustrate how such a survey can help constrain the nature of the dark energy as well as cluster scaling law evolution, i.e. non gravitational physics.

The influence of cool galaxy cluster cores on the X-ray luminosity--gravitational mass relation is studied with Chandra observations of 64 clusters in the HIFLUGCS sample. We present X-ray and optical properties of the optically confirmed galaxy cluster sample from the 3XMM/SDSS Stripe 82 cluster survey. The sample includes 54 galaxy clusters in the redshift range of 0.05-1.2, with a median redshift of 0.36. We first present the X-ray temperature and luminosity measurements that are used to investigate the X-ray luminosity-temperature relation.
