We present the XMM-LSS cluster catalogue corresponding to the CFHTLS D1 area. The list contains 13 spectroscopically confirmed, X-ray selected galaxy clusters over 0.8 deg2 to a redshift of unity and so constitutes the highest density sample of clusters to date. The X-ray luminosity function is an important statistic of the census of galaxy clusters and an important means to probe the cosmological model of our Universe. We present the X-ray properties and scaling relations of a flux-limited morphology-unbiased sample of 12 X-ray luminous galaxy clusters at redshift around 0.2 based on XMM-Newton observations. The scaled radial profiles are characterized by a self-similar behavior at radii outside the cluster cores (>0.2 r500) for the temperature, surface brightness, entropy, gas mass and total mass. We present an analysis of the 2-point correlation function, of the X-ray Brightest Abell-type Cluster sample (XBACs; Ebeling et al. 1998) and of the cosmological constraints that it provides. We investigate the relationship between soft \xray luminosity and mass for low redshift clusters of galaxies by comparing observed number counts to expectations of $\Lambda$CDM cosmologies. One hundred and six galaxy clusters have been studied in detail using X-ray data and important global physical properties have been determined. Correlations between these properties are studied with respect to the description of clusters as a self-similar class of objects. The results support the self-similar picture only partly and significant deviations are found for some correlations.
