We present a study of the X-ray variability properties and spectral shapes of five active galaxies all of which show extreme or enigmatic X-ray properties. We focus on QSO 0117-2837, RXJ0134.3-4258, and NGC 4051, and briefly comment on Mrk 1298 and 4C +74.26. The individual objects were originally partly selected as candidates to host warm absorbers on the basis of (i) characteristic X-ray absorption features (NGC 4051, Mrk 1298, 4C +74.26), (ii) extreme X-ray spectral steepness (QSO 0117-2837; this object is found to be located in the `zone of avoidance' when plotted in the Gamma_x - FWHM_Hbeta diagram), and (iii) drastic spectral variability (RXJ0134.3-4258). The temporal analysis reveals large-amplitude variability by a factor ~30 in the long-term X-ray lightcurve of NGC 4051, very rapid variability of Mrk 1298, constant X-ray flux of the NLSy1 galaxy QSO 0117-2837, and constant mean countrate of RXJ0134.3-4258 despite huge spectral changes. Besides the warm absorber, several further mechanisms and their merits/shortcomings are investigated to explain the spectral characteristics of the individual objects. Different models are favored for different sources. Consequences for Narrow-line Seyfert 1s in general are discussed and we present results from photoionization models to distinguish between different suggested NLSy1 scenarios.

Warm absorbers are an important new tool for investigating the conditions within the central regions of active galaxies. They have been observed in ~50% of the well-studied Seyfert galaxies and have also been detected in quite a number of Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLSy1). Here, we present a study of the X-ray properties of several NLSy1s with focus on their warm absorbers: (a) An analysis of all ROSAT PSPC observations of NGC 4051 including new ones is performed, which ...

We present a study of the X-ray properties of several NLS1 galaxies, focusing on their warm absorbers. In the first part, we discuss properties of dusty and dust-free warm absorbers in NLS1s, and study their potential contribution to high-ionization optical iron lines. In the second part, we summarize our work on the exceptional spectral variability of the NLS1 galaxy RX J0134.3-4258 (from Gamma about -4.4 in the ROSAT all-sky survey observation, to about -2.2 in our subseque...

The soft X-ray band of many active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is affected by obscuration due to partially ionised matter crossing our line of sight. In this context, two past XMM-Newton observations (6 months apart) and a simultaneous NuSTAR-Swift ($\sim$8 years later) exposure of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1E 0754.6+392.8 revealed an intense and variable WA and hints of additional absorbers in the Fe K$\alpha$ band. We present the first X-ray characterisation of this AGN d...

We report the discovery of a narrow-line QSO (NLQSO) RX J1334.2+3759 with a steep soft X-ray spectrum. Soft X-ray emission from the NLQSO is highly variable. Changes in the intensity by a factor of about 2 have been detected in the ROSAT PSPC observations of RX J1334.2+3759 on time scales of 20000-40000s. Rapid variability events have also been observed from RX J1334.2+3759. The most extreme variable event has Delta L/Delta t = (1.95+/-1.02)E42 erg/s/s corresponding to a chan...

We present X-ray observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 0558-504 obtained with RXTE during a 1-year monitoring campaign. This source, which is one of the very few radio-loud NLS1 galaxies, shows strong X-ray flux variability on time scales of weeks-months accompanied by spectral variability. The main goal of this study is to investigate the spectral variability with model-independent methods and time-resolved spectroscopy in order to shed light on the origin of ...

We present a systematic analysis of the X-ray spectral properties of a sample of 22 ``narrow-line'' Seyfert 1 galaxies for which data are available from the ASCA public archive. Many of these sources, which were selected on the basis of their relatively narrow H-beta line width (FWHM <= 2000 km/s), show significant spectral complexity in the X-ray band. Their measured hard power-law continua have photon indices spanning the range 1.6 - 2.5 with a mean of 2.1, which is only sl...

We have discovered a Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy and identified it with an ultrasoft X-ray source RX 215319-1514 detected with ROSAT. We present its X-ray and optical spectral characteristics. Its redshift is found to be 0.0778+-0.0002. Its optical spectrum shows fairly strong Fe II emission lines, and its X-ray spectrum has an extremely steep power-law index of Gamma greater/equal 4, making it an extremely interesting example of this class of AGNs. RE J2248-511 is one of only 14 non-blazar AGN detected in the far ultraviolet by the ROSAT Wide Field Camera implying a large ultrasoft X-ray flux. This soft X-ray excess is strongly variable on year timescales, a common property of Narrow Line Seyfert 1s, yet its optical linewidths classify this source as a broad-lined Seyfert 1. We use four nearly simultaneous optical--X-ray SEDs spanning 7 years to study the spectral shape and long term variability of RE J2248-511. Here ...

We report on Swift observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1) RX J0148.3--2758. It was observed for 41.6 ks in 2005 May and for 15.8 ks in 2005 December. On short as well as on long timescales RX J0148.3--2758 is a highly variable source. It doubles its X-ray flux within 18-25 ks. The observation of 2005 December 09, which had a flux 4 times lower than during the 2005 May observations, shows a significant hardening of the X-ray hardness ratio compared with the 20...
