We present a theoretical study of the magnetic phase diagram of the frustrated coupled ladder structure realized recently in several materials. This system displays a nondegenerate spin-gap state in the dimer limit and an infinitely degenerate spin-gap state in the regime of weakly-coupled zig-zag chains. Between these we demonstrate the existence of gapless, magnetically ordered regions whose order is antiferromagnetic close to the honeycomb lattice limit, and incommensurate...

We study the S=1 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with spatially anisotropic nearest neighbor couplings $J_{1x}$, $J_{1y}$ frustrated by a next-nearest neighbor coupling $J_{2}$ numerically using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and analytically employing the Schwinger-Boson mean-field theory (SBMFT). Up to relatively strong values of the anisotropy, within both methods we find quantum fluctuations to stabilize the N\'{e}el ordered state above t...

A large part of the interest in magnets with frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions comes from the many new phases found in applied magnetic field. In this Article, we explore some of the new phases which arise in a model with frustrated ferromagnetic interactions, the $J_1-J_2-J_3$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice. Using a combination of classical Monte-Carlo simulation and spin-wave theory, we uncover behaviour reminiscent of some widely-studied frustrated antiferrom...

We report magnetization and specific heat measurements in the 2D frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 at temperatures down to 0.05 K and high magnetic fields up to 11.5 T applied along a, b and c-axes. The low-field susceptibility chi (T) M/B shows a broad maximum around 2.8 K characteristic of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations and the overall temperature dependence is well described by high temperature series expansion calculations for the partial...

The Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a two-dimensional triangular lattice is a paradigmatic problem in frustrated magnetism. Even in the classical limit, its properties are far from simple. The "120 degree" ground state favoured by the frustrated antiferromagnetic interactions contains a hidden chiral symmetry, and supports two distinct types of excitation. And famously, three distinct phases, including a collinear one-third magnetisation plateau, are stabilised by thermal fluct...

We review ground states and excitations of a quantum antiferromagnet on triangular and other frustrated lattices. We pay special attention to the combined effects of magnetic field h, spatial anisotropy R, and spin magnitude S. The focus of the review is on the novel collinear spin density wave and spin nematic states, which are characterized by fully gapped transverse spin excitations with $S^z = \pm 1$. We discuss extensively R-h phase diagram of the antiferromagnet, both i...

We study the ground state phase diagram of a frustrated spin tube in a strong external magnetic field. This model can be viewed as two coupled zigzag spin chains, or as a two-leg spin ladder with frustrating next-nearest-neighbor couplings along the legs, and its study is motivated by the physics of such materials as Sulfolane-Cu_{2}Cl_{4} and BiCu_{2}PO_{6}. In magnetic fields right below the saturation, the system can be effectively represented as a dilute gas of two specie...

The competition between different forms of order is central to the problem of strong correlation. This is particularly true of frustrated systems, which frequently exist at or near to a zero-temperature critical point. Here we show that a state with a half-magnetization plateau but no long range order can arise when a three dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet is tuned to a critical point bordering a metamagnetic state. We use classical Monte Carlo simulation and low-temper...

We present Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations of an exchange-anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a square lattice with nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions. The ground state phase diagram shows two classical magnetically ordered phases for dominating antiferromagnetic S^z-interactions and for large quantum fluctuations a ferromagnetic order in the x-y plane. In between a finite region is detected where neither classical nor quantum mechanical order, e.g. long-rang...

We study numerically the formation of magnetization plateaux with the Lanczos method in 2-leg ladders with mixed spins of magnitudes $(S_1,S_2)=(1,1/2)$ located at alternating positions along the ladder and with dimerization $\gamma$. For interchain coupling $J'>0$ and $\gamma=0$, we find normalized plateaux at $m=1/3$ starting at zero field and $m=1$ (saturation), while when $\gamma \ne 0$ is columnar, another extra plateau at $m=2/3$ shows up. For $J'<0$, when $\gamma<\gamm...
