Detailed magneto-transport data on dense wires of $MgB_2$ are reported for applied magnetic fields up to 18 T. The temperature and field dependencies of the electrical resistivity are consistent with $MgB_2$ behaving like a simple metal and following a generalized form of Kohler's rule. In addition, given the generally high $T_c$ values and narrow resistive transition widths associated with $MgB_2$ synthesized in this manner, combined with applied magnetic fields of up to 18 T, an accurate and complete $H_{c2}(T)$ curve could be determined. This curve agrees well with curves determined from lower field measurements on sintered pellets and wires of $MgB_2$. $H_{c2}(T)$ is linear in $T$ over a wide range of temperature (7 K $\le~T~\le$ 32 K) and has an upward curvature for $T$ close to $T_c$. These features are similar to other high $\kappa$, clean limit, boron-bearing intermetallics: $YNi_2B_2C$ and $LuNi_2B_2C$.

$MgB_2$ becomes superconducting just below 40 K. Whereas porous polycrystalline samples of $MgB_2$ can be synthesized from boron powders, in this letter we demonstrate that dense wires of $MgB_2$ can be prepared by exposing boron filaments to $Mg$ vapor. The resulting wires have a diameter of 160 ${\mu}m$, are better than 80% dense and manifest the full $\chi = -1/4{\pi}$ shielding in the superconducting state. Temperature-dependent resistivity measurements indicate that $MgB...

Magnetotransport measurements are presented on polycrystalline MgB2 samples. The resistive upper critical magnetic field reveals a temperature dependence with a positive curvature from Tc = 39.3 K down to about 20 K, then changes to a slightly negative curvature reaching 25 T at 1.5 K. The 25- Tesla upper critical field is much higher than what is known so far on polycrystals of MgB2 but it is in agreement with recent data obtained on epitaxial MgB2 films. The deviation of Bc...

The upper critical field Hc2(T) of sintered pellets of the recently discovered MgB_2 superconductor was investigated in magnetic fields up to 16 T. The upper critical field of the major fraction of the investigated sample was determined from ac susceptibility and resistance data and was found to increase up to Hc2(0) = 13 T at T = 0 corresponding to a coherence length of 5.0 nm. A small fraction of the sample exhibits higher upper critical fields which were measured both resi...

We report the temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent resistivity of MgB2 sintered at high temperature and high pressure condition. The superconducting transition width for the resistivity measurement was about 0.4 K, and the low-field magnetization showed a sharp superconducting transition with a transition width of about 1 K. The resistivity in the normal state roughly followed T^2 behavior with smaller residual resistivity ratio (RRR) of 3 over broad temperature region a...

We prepared and characterized monofilamentary MgB2 wires with a mechanically reinforced composite sheath of Ta(Nb)/Cu/steel, which leads to dense filaments and correspondingly high transport currents up to Jc = 10^5 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K, self field. The reproducibility of the measured transport currents was excellent and not depending on the wire diameter. Using different precursors, commercial reacted powder or an unreacted Mg/B powder mixture, a strong influence on the pinning b...

The upper critical field Hc2(T) of sintered pellets of the recently discovered MgB_2 superconductor was investigated by transport, ac susceptibility and dc magnetization measurements in magnetic fields up to 16 T covering a temperature range between Tc ~ 39 K and T = 3 K ~ 0.1Tc. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field, Hc2(T), shows a positive curvature near Tc similar to that found for the borocarbides YNi_2B_2C and LuNi_2B_2C indicating that MgB_2 is in the ...

We present a study of the effects of non-stoichiometry, boron purity, wire diameter and post-synthesis treatment (etching and Mg distilling) on the temperature dependent resistance and resistivity of sintered MgB2 pellets and wire segments. Whereas the residual resistivity ratio (RRR) varies between RRR \~ 4 to RRR > 20 for different boron purity, it is only moderately affected by non-stoichiometry (from 20% Mg deficiency to 20% Mg excess) and is apparently independent of wir...

The resistivity and magnetoresistance in the normal state for bulk and thin-film MgB2 with different nominal compositions have been studied systematically. These samples show different temperature dependences of normal state resistivity and residual resistance ratios although their superconducting transition temperatures are nearly the same, except for the thin-film sample. The correlation between the residual resistance ratio (RRR) and the power law dependence of the low tem...

In this paper, we analyze the upper critical field of four MgB2 thin films, with different resistivity (between 5 to 50 mWcm) and critical temperature (between 29.5 to 38.8 K), measured up to 28 Tesla. In the perpendicular direction the critical fields vary from 13 to 24 T and we can estimate 42-57 T range in other direction. We observe linear temperature dependence even at low temperatures without saturation, in contrast to BCS theory. Considering the multiband nature of the...

By synthesizing MgB$_{2}$ using boron of different nominal purity we found values of the residual resistivity ratio ($RRR = R(300 K) / R(42 K)$) from 4 to 20, which covers almost all values found in literature. To obtain high values of $RRR$, high purity reagents are necessary. With the isotopically pure boron we obtained the highest $RRR \sim$ 20 for the stoichiometric compound. We also investigated Mg$_{x}$$^{11}$B$_{2}$ samples with 0.8 $< x <$ 1.2. For the range Mg$_{0.8}...
