The origin of the resistive transition broadening for MgB2 thin films was investigated. Thermally activated flux flow is found to be responsible for the resistivity contribution in the vicinity of Tc. The origin of the observed extraordinary strong magnetic field dependence of the activation energy of the flux motion is discussed.

The review considers bulk MgB2-based materials in terms of their structure, superconducting and mechanical properties. Superconducting transition temperatures of 34.5-39.4 K, critical current densities of 1.8-1.0 x E6 A/sq.cm in self field and 103 in 8 T field at 20 K, 3-1.5xE5 A/sq. cm in self field at 35 K, HC2 15 T at 22 K and Hirr 13 T at 20 K have been registered for polycrystalline materials. As TEM and SEM study show, dispersed higher borides and rather big amount (5-1...

Low resistivity ("clean") MgB2 bulk samples annealed in Mg vapor show an increase in upper critical field Hc2(T) and irreversibility field Hirr(T) by a factor of 2 in both transport and magnetic measurements. The best sample displayed Hirr above 14 T at 4.2 K and 6 T at 20 K. These changes were accompanied by an increase of the 40 K resistivity from 1.0 to 18 microohm-cm and a lowering of the resistivity ratio from 15 to 3, while the critical temperature Tc decreased by only ...

We report on the results of a comparative investigation of highly dense bulk MgB$_2$ samples prepared by three methods: (i) hot deformation; (ii) high pressure sintering; and (iii) mechanical alloying of Mg and B powders with subsequent hot compaction. All types of samples were studied by ac-susceptibility, dc-magnetization and resistivity measurements in magnetic fields up to $\mu_0H=160$ kOe. A small but distinct anisotropy of the upper critical field $H_{c2}^{a,b}/H_{c2}^{...

Recent advances in MgB2 conductors are leading to a new level of performance. Based on the use of proper powders, proper chemistry, and an architecture which incorporates internal Mg diffusion (IMD), a dense MgB2 structure with not only a high critical current density Jc, but also a high engineering critical current density, Je, can be obtained. In this paper, a series of these advanced (or second - generation, "2G") conductors has been prepared. Scanning electron microscopy ...

Critical fields of four MgB2 thin films with a normal state resistivity ranging from 5 to 50 mWcm and Tc from 29.5 to 38.8 K were measured up to 28 T. Hc2(T) curves present a linear behavior towards low temperatures. Very high critical field values have been found, up to 24 T along the c-axis and 57 T in the basal plane not depending on the normal state resistivity values. In this paper, critical fields will be analyzed taking into account the multiband nature of MgB2; we wil...

High-density bulk materials of a newly discovered 40K intermetallic MgB2 superconductor were prepared by high pressure sintering. Superconducting transition with the onset temperature of 39K was confirmed by both magnetic and resistive measurements. Magnetization versus field (M-H) curve shows the behavior of a typical Type II superconductor and the lower critical field Hc1(0) estimated from M-H curve is 0.032T. The bulk sample shows good connection between grains and critica...

Carbon-doped magnesium diboride was fabricated from pre-reacted pure MgB2 by mechanical alloying. The sample set had excellent critical current densities Jc(8T,4.2K) ranging from 15-60 kA/cm2, depending on composition. Magneto-optical imaging detected regions up to 0.5 mm in size which were nearly 100% dense with Jc 2-6 times that of the matrix. Evaluation of resistivity curves using the Rowell method predicts that only 10-50% of the cross sectional area carries the normal st...

The high resistivity of many bulk and film samples of MgB2 is most readily explained by the suggestion that only a fraction of the cross-sectional area of the samples is effectively carrying current. Hence the supercurrent (Jc) in such samples will be limited by the same area factor, arising for example from porosity or from insulating oxides present at the grain boundaries. We suggest that a correlation should exist, Jc ~ 1/{Rho(300K) - Rho(50K)}, where Rho(300K) - Rho(50K) ...

Magnetic field of up to 12 T was applied during the sintering process of pure MgB2 and carbon nanotube (CNT) doped MgB2 wires. We have demonstrated that magnetic field processing results in grain refinement, homogeneity and significant enhancement in Jc(H) and Hirr. The Jc of pure MgB2 wire increased by up to a factor of 3 to 4 and CNT doped MgB2 by up to an order of magnitude in high field region respectively, compared to that of the non-field processed samples. Hirr for CNT...
