The interfacial behavior of quantum materials leads to emergent phenomena such as two dimensional electron gases, quantum phase transitions, and metastable functional phases. Probes for in situ and real time surface sensitive characterization are critical for active monitoring and control of epitaxial synthesis, and hence the atomic-scale engineering of heterostructures and superlattices. Termination switching, especially as an interfacial process in ternary complex oxides, h...

Atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) are used to gain atomic-scale insights into the heteroepitaxy of lanthanum-strontium manganite (LSMO, La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_{3-{\delta}}$, $x$ $\approx$ 0.2) on SrTiO$_3$(110). LSMO is a perovskite oxide characterized by several composition-dependent surface reconstructions. The flexibility of the surface allows it to incorporate nonstoichiometries during growth, which result in ...

Heteroepitaxial growth of BaSnO$_3$ (BSO) and Ba$_{1-x}$La$_x$SnO$_3$ (x = 7 %) (LBSO) thin films on different perovskite single crystal (SrTiO$_3$ (001) and SmScO$_3$ (110)) substrates has been achieved by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) under optimized deposition conditions. X-ray diffraction measurements indicate that the films on either of these substrates are relaxed due to the large mismatch and present a high degree of crystallinity with narrow rocking curves and smooth ...

The combinatorial approach to all oxide material and device research is based on the synthesis of hundreds of related materials in a single experiment. This approach requires the development of new tools to rapidly characterize these materials libraries and new techniques to analyze the resulting data. The research presented here is intended to make a contribution towards meeting this demand, and thereby advance the pace of materials research. In many cases photovoltaic deter...

The first examples of single crystal epitaxial thin films of a high entropy perovskite oxide are synthesized. Pulsed laser deposition is used to grow the configurationally disordered ABO3 perovskite, Ba(Zr0.2Sn0.2Ti0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2)O3, epitaxially on SrTiO3 and MgO substrates. X-ray diffraction and scanning transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that the films are single phase with excellent crystallinity and atomically abrupt interfaces to the underlying substrates. Atomi...

The subtle balance of electronic correlations, crystal field splitting and spin--orbit coupling in layered Ir$^{4+}$ oxides can give rise to novel electronic and magnetic phases. Experimental progress in this field relies on the synthesis of epitaxial films of these oxides. However, the growth of layered iridates with excellent structural quality is a great experimental challenge. Here we selectively grow high quality single--phase films of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, a...

Compositionally complex perovskites provide the opportunity to develop stable and active catalysts for electrochemical applications. The challenge lies in the identification of single-phase perovskites with optimized composition for high electrical conductivity. Leveraging a recently discovered effect of self-organized thin film growth during reactive sputtering, La-Co-Mn-O and La-Co-Mn-Fe-O perovskite (ABO3) thin film materials libraries are synthesized. These show phase-pur...

We present a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) system that can monitor growth by simultaneously using in situ optical spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED). The RHEED precisely monitors the number of thin-film layers and surface structure during the deposition and the SE measures the optical spectra of the samples simultaneously. The thin-film thickness information obtained from RHEED facilitates the SE modeling process, which all...

The pursuit of more advanced electronics, finding solutions to energy needs, and tackling a wealth of social issues often hinges upon the discovery and optimization of new functional materials that enable disruptive technologies or applications. However, the discovery rate of these materials is alarmingly low. Much of the information that could drive this rate higher is scattered across tens of thousands of papers in the extant literature published over several decades, and a...

Our ability to design and fabricate electronic devices with reproducible properties using complex oxides is critically dependent on our ability to controllably synthesize these materials in thin-film form. Structure-property relationships are intimately tied to film and interface composition. Here we report on the effects of cation stoichiometry in LaCrO3 heteroepitaxial films prepared using molecular beam epitaxy. We show that LaCrO3 films grow pseudomorphically on SrTiO3(00...
