We report on the selective fabrication of high-quality Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and SrIrO$_3$ epitaxial thin films from a single polycrystalline Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ target by pulsed laser deposition. Using a combination of X-ray diffraction and photoemission spectroscopy characterizations, we discover that within a relatively narrow range of substrate temperature, the oxygen partial pressure plays a critical role in the cation stoichiometric ratio of the films, and triggers the stabilization ...

Vapor-pressure mismatched materials such as transition metal chalcogenides have emerged as electronic, photonic, and quantum materials with scientific and technological importance. However, epitaxial growth of vapor-pressure mismatched materials are challenging due to differences in the reactivity, sticking coefficient, and surface adatom mobility of the mismatched species constituting the material, especially sulfur containing compounds. Here, we report a novel approach to g...

Rare earth perovskite oxides constitute a wide family of materials presenting functional proper- ties strongly coupled to their crystalline structure. Here, we report on the experimental results on epitaxial PrVO3 deposited on SrTiO3 single crystal substrates by pulsed laser deposition. By com- bining advanced structural characterization tools, we have observed that the PVO unrelaxed film structure grown on STO, is characterized by two kinds of oriented domains whose epitaxia...

Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) of homoepitaxial SrTiO3 <001> was studied with in-situ x-ray specular reflectivity and surface diffuse x-ray scattering. Unlike prior reflectivity-based studies, these measurements access both the time- and the length-scales of the evolution of the surface morphology during growth. In particular, we show that this technique allows direct measurements of the diffusivity for both inter- and intra-layer transport. Our results explicitly limit the po...

Pulsed laser deposition of SrTiO3/LaGaO3 and SrTiO3/LaAlO3 interfaces has been analyzed with a focus on the kinetic energy of the ablated species. LaGaO3 and LaAlO3 plasma plumes were studied by fast photography and space-resolved optical emission spectroscopy. Reflection high energy electron diffraction was performed proving a layer-by-layer growth up to 10-1 mbar oxygen pressure. The role of the energetic plasma plume on the two-dimensional growth and the presence of interf...

The use of oxide materials in oxide electronics requires their controlled epitaxial growth. Recently, it was shown that Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) allows to monitor the growth of oxide thin films even at high oxygen pressure. Here, we report the sub-unit cell molecular or block layer growth of the oxide materials Sr2RuO4, MgO, and magnetite using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) from stoichiometric targets. Whereas for perovskites such as SrTiO3 or doped...

We report on the preparation and characterization of epitaxial thin films of the double-perovskite Sr$_2$CrWO$_6$ by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). On substrates with low lattice mismatch like SrTiO$_3$, epitaxial Sr$_2$CrWO$_6$ films with high crystalline quality can be grown in a molecular layer-by-layer growth mode. Due to the similar ionic radii of Cr and W, these elements show no sublattice order. Nevertheless, the measured Curie temperature is well above 400 K. Due to t...

The epitaxial growth of anatase (001) films deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on SrTiO3 (001) (STO) single crystals has been studied using X-ray diffraction and surface sensitivity UHV techniques. The evolution of the strain represented by the microstrain and the change of the in-plane and out-of-plane lattice parameters with film growth temperature, the effect of the annealing temperature and the influence of the oxygen content of th...

We have studied the growth dynamics and electronic properties of SrTiO3-d homoepitaxial films by pulsed laser deposition. We find the two dominant factors determining the growth mode are the kinetics of surface crystallization and oxidation. When matched, persistent two-dimensional layer-by-layer growth can be obtained for hundreds of unit cells. By tuning these kinetic factors, oxygen vacancies can be frozen in the film, allowing controlled, systematic doping across a metal-...

La-based perovskites are a versatile class of materials that are of interest for solid oxide fuel cells and electrocatalytic water splitting. During fabrication of composition spread materials libraries of La-Co-based oxide systems for the discovery of new catalytic materials, an unusual phase formation phenomenon was observed: instead of the expected continuous composition gradient, regions with homogeneous composition and single-phase structure (La2O3 or stoichiometric La-p...
