We provide an explanation of the spin-freezing transition recently observed by Chou et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 2323 (1993)) in La_{2-x}Sr_x CuO_4 for x <= 0.02. We propose that topological excitations of the 2D Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet having non-coplanar transverse components have a pair-interaction energy that qualitatively and quantitatively agrees with the observed values of spin-freezing temperature as a function of doping.

We study the order-from-disorder transition and reentrant magnetism in La(2-x)Sr(x)Cu(1-z)Zn(z)O(4) within the framework of a long-wavelength nonlinear sigma model that properly incorporates the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and XY anisotropies. Doping with nonmagnetic impurities, such as Zn, is considered according to classical percolation theory, whereas the effect of Sr, which introduces charge carriers into the CuO(2) planes, is described as a dipolar frustration of the antiferro...

We report the observation of a magnetic-field-induced transition between magnetically disordered and ordered phases in slightly under-doped La(2-x)SrxCuO4 with x=0.144. Static incommensurate spin-density-wave order is induced above a critical field of about 3 T, as measured by elastic neutron scattering. Our results allow us to constrain the location of a quantum critical point on the phase diagram.

We report here a detailed study of AC/DC magnetization and longitudinal/transverse transport properties of La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystals below $T_{c}$ = 121 K. We find that the resistivity upturn below 40 K is related to the reentrant spin glass phase at the same temperature, accompanied by additional anomalous Hall effects. The carrier concentration from the ordinary Hall effects remains constant during the transition and is close to the nominal doping ...

We report on structural, magnetic and electrical properties of Sr-doped LaMnO_3 single crystals for doping levels 0.4 < x < 0.85. The complex structural and magnetic phase diagram can only be explained assuming significant contributions from the orbital degrees of freedom. Close to x = 0.6 a ferromagnetic metal is followed by an antiferromagnetic metallic phase below 200 K. This antiferromagnetic metallic phase exists in a monoclinic crystallographic structure. Following theo...

We have studied the spin glass behaviour of non-superconducting La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{0.95}$Zn$_{0.05}$O$_4$ ($x=0.10-0.22$). As in the superconducting analogues of these samples the spin glass transition temperature $T_g$ decreases with increasing $x$, and vanishes at $x=0.19$. A local enhancement in $T_g$ at $x=0.12$ is also observed and attributed to stripe ordering. The disappearance of $T_g$ for $x\geq0.19$ is discussed in terms of a quantum phase transition.

In this paper we compute the mean field phase diagram of a doped antiferromagnet, in a magnetic field and with anisotropic exchange. We show that at zero temperature there is a metamagnetic transition from the antiferromagnetic configuration along the z direction to a spin-flop state. In the spin flop phase the system prefers a commensurate magnetic order, at low doping, whereas at larger doping the incommensurate phase is favorable. Contrary to the pure Heisenberg case, the ...

The crystal and magnetic structure of La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_4 (0<x<0.7) has been studied by diffraction techniques and high resolution capacitance dilatometry. There is no evidence for a structural phase transition like those found in isostructural cuprates or nickelates, but there are significant structural changes induced by the variation of temperature and doping which we attribute to a rearrangement of the orbital occupation.

Recent neutron scattering measurements on the La2-xSrxCuO4 system have revealed a drastic change of the incommensurate static spin correlations from diagonal in the insulating region to parallel in the superconducting region. We report the doping dependence of the ordered magnetic moment for the hole concentration region 0.03 <= x <= 0.12, focusing on the relationship between the static magnetism and the superconductivity. The elastic magnetic crosssection decreases monotonic...

The emergence and the evolution of the metallic charge transport in the La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} system from lightly- to optimally-doped samples (x = 0.01 - 0.17) are studied. We demonstrate that in high-quality single crystals the in-plane resistivity shows a metallic behavior for ALL values of x at moderate temperatures and that the hole mobility at 300 K changes only by a factor of 3 from x = 0.01 to 0.17, where its x-dependence is found to be intriguingly similar to that of ...
