Reproducible scanning tunneling microscope (STM) spectra of $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}$ consistently exhibit asymmetric tunneling characteristics, with the higher peak conductance corresponding to a negatively biased sample. We consider various possible sources of this asymmetry that are not intrinsic to the superconducting state, including energy dependence of the normal state densities of states of sample and/or tip, existence of bandwidth cutoffs, unequal work functions o...

We have developed a material specific theoretical framework for modelling scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) of high temperature superconducting materials in the normal as well as the superconducting state. Results for $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}$ (Bi2212) show clearly that the tunneling process strongly modifies the STS spectrum from the local density of states (LDOS) of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital of Cu. The dominant tunneling channel to the surface Bi involves the $d_{x^2...

We report scanning tunneling spectroscopic studies of cuprate and iron-arsenic superconductors, including YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} (Y-123, T_c = 93 K), Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_2 (La-112, T_c = 43 K), and the "122" compounds Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 (Co-122 with x = 0.06, 0.08, 0.12 for T_c = 14, 24, 20 K). For H > 0, pseudogap (\Delta_{PG}) features are revealed inside the vortices, with \Delta_{PG} = [(\Delta_{eff})^2+(\Delta_{SC})^2]^{1/2} > \Delta_{SC} in Y-123 and \Delta_{PG} < \D...

In underdoped cuprate high $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ superconductors, various local orders and symmetry breaking states, in addition to superconductivity, reside in the CuO$_2$ planes. The confinement of the CuO$_2$ planes can therefore play a fundamental role in modifying the hierarchy between the various orders and their intertwining with superconductivity. Here we present the growth of $a$-axis oriented YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ films, spanning the whole underdoped side of the ph...

We report planar tunneling measurements on thin films of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ at various doping levels under magnetic fields. By choosing a special setup configuration, we have probed a field induced energy scale that dominates in the vicinity of a node of the d-wave superconducting order parameter. We found a high doping sensitivity for this energy scale. At Optimum doping this energy scale is in agreement with an induced $id_{xy}$ order parameter. We found that it can be ...

We present the experimental results for Nb/Au/YBaCuO structures, in which the current flows along (001) direction of YBaCuO film. The theoretical evaluations show, that at the experimental values of the Au/YBaCuO interface transparency, determined from the interface resistance D~10^-6, the critical current of the structure is of the fluctuation order of magnitude due to the sharp decrease of the amplitude potential of the superconducting carriers on this interface. Obtained I...

The existence of Josephson tunneling has been demonstrated between YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ and Pb with the current flowing along the c-axis of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$. This is presumed to come from an s-wave component of the superconductivity in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$, perhaps induced by the orthorhombic distortion. This hypothesis by itself appears to be in contradiction with experiments on twinned samples whose tunneling current does not follow random statistic...

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of thin epitaxial $SrRuO_{3}/(110)YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}$ ferromagnet/superconductor bilayers, reveal a clear penetration of the Andreev bound states into the ferromagnetic layer. The penetration is manifested in the density of states of the ferromagnet as a split zero bias conductance peak with an imbalance between peak heights. Our data indicate that the splitting occurs at the superconductor side as a consequence of induced magnetization, con...

We have probed the Landau levels of nodal quasi-particles by tunneling along a nodal direction of (110) oriented YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ thin films with a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the $CuO_2$ planes, and parallel to the film's surface. In optimally doped films and at low temperature, finite energy nodal states are clearly observed in films thinner than the London penetration depth. Above a well defined temperature the order parameter reverts to a pure \emph{d}-w...

We report on the observation of self-organized stripe-like structures on the as-grown surface and in the bulk of (Nd,Eu,Gd)Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ single crystals. The periodicity of the stripes on the surface lies between 500 and 800 nm. These are possibly the growth steps of the crystal. Transmission electron microscopy investigations revealed stripes of periodicity in the range of 20 to 40 nm in the bulk. From electron back scattered diffraction investigations, no crystallograph...
