We study quantum effects in the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded onto the edge of a Brillouin zone of a one-dimensional periodic potential created by an optical lattice. We show that quantum fluctuations trigger the dynamical instability of the Bloch states of the condensate and can lead to the generation of arrays of matter-wave gap solitons. Our approach also allows us to study the instability-induced anomalous heating of the condensate at the edge of the Brill...

We report the experimental observation of a lensing effect on a Bose-Einstein condensate expanding in a moving 1D optical lattice. The effect of the periodic potential can be described by an effective mass dependent on the condensate quasi-momentum. By changing the velocity of the atoms in the frame of the optical lattice we induce a focusing of the condensate along the lattice direction. The experimental results are compared with the numerical predictions of an effective 1D ...

By accelerating a Bose-Einstein condensate in a controlled way across the edge of the Brillouin zone of a 1D optical lattice, we investigate the stability of the condensate in the vicinity of the zone edge. Through an analysis of the visibility of the interference pattern after a time-of-flight and the widths of the interference peaks, we characterize the onset of instability as the acceleration of the lattice is decreased. We briefly discuss the significance of our results w...

We investigate experimentally a Bose Einstein condensate placed in a 1D optical lattice whose phase or amplitude is modulated in a frequency range resonant with the first bands of the band structure. We study the combined effect of the strength of interactions and external confinement on the 1 and 2-phonon transitions. We identify lines immune or sensitive to atom-atom interactions. Experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations. Using the band mapping ...

We report on experiments that demonstrate dynamical instability in a Bose-Einstein condensate at the band-edge of a one-dimensional optical lattice. The instability manifests as rapid depletion of the condensate and conversion to a thermal cloud. We consider the collisional processes that can occur in such a system, and perform numerical modeling of the experiments using both a mean-field and beyond mean-field approach. We compare our numerical results to the experimental dat...

In this paper we examine the excitations observable in atoms confined in an optical lattice around the superfluid-insulator transition. We use increases in the number variance of atoms, subsequent to tilting the lattice as the primary diagnostic of excitations in the lattice. We show that this locally determined quantity should be a robust indicator of coherence changes in the atoms observed in recent experiments. This was found to hold for commensurate or non-commensurate fi...

We study the normal mode splitting in a system consisting of a Bose Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped inside a Fabry Perot cavity driven by a single mode laser field. We analyze the variations in frequency and damping rate of the collective density excitation of a BEC imparted by the optical field. We study the occurrence of normal mode splitting which appears as consequences of the hybridization of the fluctuations of the intracavity field and the condensate mode. It is sh...

We discuss several possible experimental signatures of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) transition for an ultracold Bose gas in an inhomogeneous optical lattice. Based on the commonly used time-of-flight imaging technique, we show that the momentum-space density profile in the first Brillouin zone, supplemented by the visibility of interference patterns, provides valuable information about the system. In particular, by crossing the BEC transition temperature, the appearan...

The quantum Rabi model describes the interaction between a two-level quantum system and a single bosonic mode. We propose a method to perform a quantum simulation of the quantum Rabi model introducing a novel implementation of the two-level system, provided by the occupation of Bloch bands in the first Brillouin zone by ultracold atoms in tailored optical lattices. The effective qubit interacts with a quantum harmonic oscillator implemented in an optical dipole trap. Our real...

In the context of Gross-Pitaevskii theory, we investigate the unconventional Bose-Einstein condensations in the two-species mixture with $p$-wave symmetry in the second band of a bipartite optical lattice. A new imaginary-time propagation method is developed to numerically determine the $p$-orbital condensation. Different from the single-species case, the two-species boson mixture exhibits two non-equivalent complex condensates in the intraspecies-interaction-dominating regim...
