A series of compounds M$_{0.1}$Sr$_{0.9}$Cu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ with Sr substituted by M=Al, La, Na and Y were prepared by solid state reaction. XRD analysis showed that these doping compounds are isostructural to SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. The magnetic susceptibility from 1.9K to 300K in an applied magnetic field of 1.0T and the specific heat from 1.9K to 25K in applied fields up to 14T were measured. The spin gap is deduced from the low temperature susceptibility as well as the spec...

Superconductivity

To clarify the superconducting gap structure of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr_2RuO_4, the in-plane thermal conductivity has been measured as a function of relative orientations of the thermal flow, the crystal axes, and a magnetic field rotating within the 2D RuO_2 planes. The in-plane variation of the thermal conductivity is incompatible with any model with line nodes vertical to the 2D planes and indicates the existence of horizontal nodes. These results place strong c...

We report the results of ac and dc magnetization (M) and heat-capacity (C) measurements on the solid solution, Sr$_3$Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$IrO$_6$. While the Zn end member is known to form in a rhombohedral pseudo one-dimensional K$_4$CdCl$_6$ structure with an antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of (T$_N$ =) 19 K, the Cu end member has been reported to form in a monoclinically distorted form with a Curie temperature of (T$_C$ =) 19 K. The magnetism of the Zn compound is found t...

The two-dimensional spin-gap system ${\rm SrCu_2(BO_3)_2}$ shows unique physical properties due to the low-dimensionality character and the strong quantum fluctuations. Experimentally, 1/8-, 1/4-, and 1/3-plateaus have been observed in the magnetization curve under magnetic fields up to 70 Tesla, and the 1/2-plateau is expected to be stabilized at higher magnetic fields. We argue that spin-lattice effects are necessary to describe the superstructures at the plateaus, and we p...

The excited state energy spectrum of a two-dimensional dimer system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ has been investigated by high field ESR. Various types of multiple-triplet bound states-excited singlet, triplet and quintet states are identified, besides two non-degenerated one-triplet excitations. Extremely strong intensity is found for these higher order bound states, which is an important consequence of the strong suppression of the one-triplet process due to the orthogonality of di...

We perform a low temperature Raman scattering study of phononic and collective spin excitations in the orthogonal dimers compound SrCu_2(BO_3)_2, focussing on the symmetry and the effects of external fields on the magnetic modes. The zero field symmetry and the behavior in magnetic fields of the elementary and bound magnetic triplet states are experimentally determined. We find that a minimal 4-spin cluster forming the unit cell is able to describe the symmetry as well as the...

We propose that Weyl triplons are expected to appear in the low energy magnetic excitations in the canonical Shastry-Sutherland compound, \ce{SrCu2(BO3)2}, a quasi-2D quantum magnet. Our results show that when a minimal, realistic inter-layer coupling is added to the well-established microscopic model describing the excitation spectrum of the individual layers, the Dirac points that appear in the zero-field triplon spectrum of the 2D model split into two pairs of Weyl points ...

We studied the specific heat and thermal conductivity of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 at low temperatures and under oriented magnetic fields H. We resolved a double peak structure of the superconducting transition under magnetic field for the first time, which provides thermodynamic evidence for the existence of multiple superconducting phases. We also found a clear limiting of the upper critical field Hc2 for the field direction parallel to the RuO2 plane only wit...

Doping of quantum antiferromagnets is an established approach to investigate the robustness of their ground state against the competing phases. Predictions of doping effects on the ground state of the Shastry-Sutherland dimer model are here verified experimentally on Mg-doped SrCu2(BO3)2. A partial incorporation of Mg2+ on the Cu2+-site in the SrCu2(BO3)2 structure leads to a subtle but systematic lattice expansion with the increasing Mg-doping concentration, which is accompa...

The Origin of Anomalous Low-Temperature Downturns in the Thermal Conductivity of Cuprates

Superconductivity

We show that the anomalous decrease in the thermal conductivity of cuprates below 300 mK, as has been observed recently in several cuprate materials including Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{7-\delta}$ in the field-induced normal state, is due to the thermal decoupling of phonons and electrons in the sample. Upon lowering the temperature, the phonon-electron heat transfer rate decreases and, as a result, a heat current bottleneck develops between the phonons, which can in some cases be...
