The non-linear (electric field-dependent) resistivity of the 2D electron system in silicon exhibits scaling as a function of electric field and electron density in both the metallic and insulating phases, providing further evidence for a true metal-insulator transition in this 2D system at B=0. Comparison with the temperature scaling yields separate determinations of the correlation length exponent, \nu=1.5, and the dynamical exponent, z=0.8, close to the theoretical value z=...

We perform a detailed finite-size scaling analysis of the sheet resistance in Bi-films and the LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ interface in the presence and absence of a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the system. Our main aim is to explore the occurrence of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) and quantum phase transition behavior in the presence of limited size, stemming from the finite extent of the homogeneous domains or the magnetic field. Moreover we explore the implic...

We explore the implications of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) critical behavior on the two dimensional (2D) quantum superconductor-insulator (QSI) transition driven by the tuning parameter x. Concentrating on the sheet resistance R(x) BKT behavior implies: an explicit quantum scaling function for R(x) along the superconducting branch ending at the nonuniversal critical value R_c=R(x_c); a BKT-transition line T_c(x) that is proportional to (x-x_c)^(z*nu) where z is the ...

We present low temperature measurements of the resistance in magnetic field of superconducting ultrathin amorphous Bi films with normal state sheet resistances, $R_N$, near the resistance quantum, $R_Q={\hbar\over {e^2}}$. For $R_N<R_Q$, the tails of the resistive transitions show the thermally activated flux flow signature characteristic of defect motion in a vortex solid with a finite correlation length. When $R_N$ exceeds $R_Q$, the tails become non-activated. We conclude ...

We present a study of the magnetic field tuned superconductor-to-insulator transition (SIT) in the electron gas that forms at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. We find that the magnetic field induces a transition into a weakly insulating state, as is observed for the electrostatically tuned SIT at this interface. Finite size scaling of the magnetoresistance yields the critical exponent product $z\nu \simeq$ 7/3, indicating that the transition is governed by quantum percolati...

We consider effects of an externally applied electrostatic field on superconductivity, self-consistently within a BCS mean field model, for a clean 3D metal thin film. The electrostatic change in superconducting condensation energy scales as $\mu^{-1}$ close to subband edges as a function of the Fermi energy $\mu$, and follows 3D scaling $\mu^{-2}$ away from them. We discuss nonlinearities beyond gate effect, and contrast results to recent experiments.

The temperature dependence of conductivity $\sigma (T)$ of a two-dimensional electron system in silicon has been studied in parallel magnetic fields B. At B=0, the system displays a metal-insulator transition at a critical electron density $n_c(0)$, and $d\sigma/dT >0$ in the metallic phase. At low fields ($B\lesssim 2$ T), $n_c$ increases as $n_c(B) - n_c(0) \propto B^{\beta}$ ($\beta\sim 1$), and the zero-temperature conductivity scales as $\sigma (n_s,B,T=0)/\sigma (n_s,0,...

A half-century after the discovery of the superconductor-insulator transition (SIT), one of the fundamental predictions of the theory, the charge Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition that is expected to occur at the insulating side of the SIT, has remained unobserved. The charge BKT transition is a phenomenon dual to the vortex BKT transition, which is at the heart of the very existence of two-dimensional superconductivity as a zero-resistance state appearing at f...

We revisit the scaling properties of the resistivity and the current-voltage characteristics at and below the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition, both in zero and nonzero magnetic field. The scaling properties are derived by integrating the renormalization group flow equations up to a scale where they can be reliably matched to simple analytic expressions. The vortex fugacity turns out to be dangerously irrelevant for these quantities below Tc, thereby altering the sc...

Superconductivity

We have studied the insulator-superconductor transition (IST) by tuning the thickness in quench-condensed $Bi$ films. The resistive transitions of the superconducting films are smooth and can be considered to represent "homogeneous" films. The observation of an IST very close to the quantum resistance for pairs, $R_{\Box}^N \sim h/4e^2$ on several substrates supports this idea. The relevant length scales here are the localization length, and the coherence length. However, at ...
