Based on ideas of off-diagonal long range order and two-fluid model, we demonstrate that adiabatic phases for a slow motion of a vortex in a superconductor film give rise naturally to the Magnus force at finite temperatures.

A vortex-induced transverse voltage in a superconducting film, previously predicted theoretically, has been seen experimentally for the first time. The magnitude of this voltage and its nonmonotonic current dependence are explained on the basis of a curvature of the trajectory of vortices resulting from their interaction. A good agreement between theory and experiment is found.

We have combined high resolution magneto-optical imaging with an ultra-fast heating/cooling technique to measure the movement of individual vortices in a superconducting film. The motion took place while the film was heated close to $T_c$, where pinning and viscous forces are relatively small. Under these conditions, vortices move due to the magnetic repulsion between them. We found that a finite vortex mass has to be included in the analysis in order to account for the exper...

In superconductors, the motion of vortices introduces unwanted dissipation that is disruptive to applications. Fortunately, material defects can immobilize vortices, acting as vortex pinning centers, which engenders dramatic improvements in superconductor material properties and device operation. This has motivated decades of research into developing methods of tailoring the disorder landscape in superconductors to increase the strength of vortex pinning. Yet efficacious mate...

We investigate the problem of forces on moving vortex in a superfluid or superconductor. The main purpose is to locate the source which leads to the contradictory results in the literature. We establish the connection between this problem to the difficult but well studied subject of resistivity formula in transport theory. The relaxation time approximation used in the force calculation via force-force correlation function is shown to be invalid. The roles of Berry's pha...

Two years ago the reasons for resistance to the fundamental vortex dynamics in super media emerged in 1990's were analyzed (cond-mat/0407007). Five "mistakes" were identified to explain this resistance. Given the current tremendous interest in vortex dynamics, it would be desirable to provide a progress report: A survey of literature reveals that 3 out 5 "mistakes" has in fact been confirmed by other researchers.

The paper analyzes the transverse forces (the Magnus and the Lorentz forces) on vortices in superfluids put into periodic potentials at $T=0$. The case of weak potential and the tight-binding limit described by the Bose-Hubbard model were addressed. The analysis was based on the balance of true momentum and quasimomentum. A special attention was paid to the superfluid close to the superfluid-insulator transition. In this area of the phase diagram the theory predicts the parti...

It is shown that the electric charge of vortices can result in a helical instability of straight vortex lines in layered superconductors, particularly Bi-based cuprates or organic superconductors. This instability may result in a phase transition to a uniformly twisted vortex state, which could be detected by torque magnetometry, neutron diffraction, electromagnetic or calorimetric measurements.

We predict the very large spin Hall effect in type-II superconductors which mechanism is drastically different from the previously known ones. We find that in the flux-flow regime the spin is transported by the spin-polarized Abrikosov vortices moving under the action of the Lorenz force in the direction perpendicular to the applied electric current. Due to the large vortex velocities the spin Hall angle can be of the order of unity in realistic systems based on the high-fiel...
