We report a detailed neutron scattering study of the ordering of spins and holes in oxygen-doped La(2)NiO(4.133). The single-crystal sample exhibits the same oxygen-interstitial order but better defined charge-stripe order than that studied previously in crystals with d = 0.125. In particular, charge order is observed up to a temperature at least twice that of the magnetic transition, T_m = 110.5 K. On cooling through T_m, the wave vector \epsilon, equal to half the charge-stripe density within an NiO(2) layer, jumps discontinuously from 1/3 to 0.2944. It continues to decrease with further cooling, showing several lock-in transitions on the way down to low temperature. To explain the observed lock-ins, a model is proposed in which each charge stripe is centered on either a row of Ni or a row of O ions. The model is shown to be consistent with the l-dependence of the magnetic peak intensities and with the relative intensities of the higher-order magnetic satellites. Analysis of the latter also provides evidence that the magnetic domain walls (charge stripes) are relatively narrow. In combination with a recent study of magnetic-field-induced effects, we find that the charge stripes are all O-centered at T>T_m, with a shift towards Ni centering at T<T_m. Inferences concerning the competing interactions responsible for the the temperature dependence of \epsilon and the localization of charge within the stripes are discussed.

We report polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction measurements on La2-xSrxNiO4 (x=0.275 and 1/3). The data for the spin ordered states are consistent with a collinear spin model in which spins with S=1 are in the NiO2 plane and are uniformly rotated from the charge and spin stripe direction. The deviation angle is larger for x=1/3 than for x=0.275. Furthermore, for x=1/3, the ordered spins reorient below 50 K, which suggests a further lock-in of the doped holes and thei...

The magnetic excitations of charge-stripe ordered La2NiO4.11 where investigated using polarized- and unpolarized-neutron scattering to determine the magnetic excitations of the charge stripe electrons. We observed a magnetic excitation mode consistent with the gapped quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic correlations of the charge stripe electrons previously observed in La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) x = 1/3 and x = 0.275.

Stripe order in La{2-x}Sr{x}NiO4 beyond x = 1/3 was studied with neutron scattering technique. At low temperatures, all the samples exhibit hole stripe order. Incommensurability \epsilon of the stripe order is approximately linear in the hole concentration n_h = x + 2\delta up to x = 1/2, where \delta denotes the off-stoichiometry of oxygen atoms. The charge and spin ordering temperatures exhibit maxima at n_h = 1/3, and both decrease beyond n_h > 1/3. For 1/3 < n_h < 1/2, th...

Inelastic neutron scattering has been used to measure the low-energy spin excitations in the ordered charge-stripe phase of La(2)NiO(4+d) with d=0.133. Spin-wave-like excitations disperse away from the incommensurate magnetic superlattice points with a velocity ~60% of that in the d=0 compound. Incommensurate inelastic peaks remain well-resolved up to at least twice the magnetic ordering temperature. Paramagnetic scattering from a d=0.105 sample, which has a N\'eel-ordered gr...

The temperature dependence of the magnetic order of stripe-ordered La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4) is investigated by neutron diffraction. Upon cooling, the widths if the magnetic Bragg peaks are observed to broaden. The degree of broadening is found to be very different for l = odd-integer and l = even-integer magnetic peaks. We argue that the observed behaviour is a result of competition between magnetic and charge order.

Charge and spin ordering in La2NiO4.17 has been studied by 139La NMR using the field and temperature dependence of the linewidth and relaxation rates. The stripes are site centered and the domain spins freeze at ~ 180 K, followed by a second transition at ~ 50 K, where the spins on the domain walls freeze. Although consistent with the neutron measurements, the results are quantitatively different from the NMR results in a nickelate with quenched Sr disorder.

We characterize the local structure and correlations of charge stripes in La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4) using transmission-electron microscopy. We present direct evidence that the stripe modulation is indeed one-dimensional within each NiO(2) plane. Furthermore, we show that individual stripes tend to be either site-centered or bond-centered, with a bias towards the former. The spacing between stripes often fluctuates about the mean, contributing to a certain degree of frustration...

Magnetic order has been investigated in stripe-ordered La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) (x = 0.275, 0.37, 0.4) by d.c. magnetization and by polarized- and unpolarized-neutron diffraction. In the magnetically ordered phase, all three compositions exhibit a magnetic transition consistent with a spin reorientation in the ab plane. For x = 0.37, the spin axes rotate from an angle of 37.7 +/- 0.3 degrees to the stripe direction at 71 K, to 52.3 +/- 0.2 degrees at 2 K. The x = 0.275 and 0.4 comp...

The existence of a stripe-liquid phase in a layered nickelate, La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4), is demonstrated through neutron scattering measurements. We show that incommensurate magnetic fluctuations evolve continuously through the charge-ordering temperature, although an abrupt decrease in the effective damping energy is observed on cooling through the transition. The energy and momentum dependence of the magnetic scattering are parametrized with a damped-harmonic-oscillator mod...

Ordering process of stripe order in La{2-x}Sr{x}NiO{4} with x being around 1/3 was investigated by neutron diffraction experiments. When the stripe order is formed at high temperature, incommensurability \epsilon of the stripe order has a tendency to show the value close to 1/3 for the samples with x at both sides of 1/3. With decreasing temperature, however, \epsilon becomes close to the value determined by the linear relation of \epsilon = n_h, where n_h is a hole concentra...
